Welcome to My Collection

My fascination with banknotes began when I discovered an old note in my grandfather's belongings. The intricate designs, historical portraits, and foreign scripts sparked a curiosity that has grown into a passionate hobby spanning many years.

This website showcases my personal collection focusing on the post-1945 period, a transformative era when colonial territories across South Asia were transitioning to independence. Each banknote in this collection tells a story of political change, economic development, and artistic expression.

Why These Five Regions?

I chose to focus on Portugal, Portuguese India, French India, Ceylon, and British India because these territories share interconnected histories and their currencies reflect the complex relationships between European colonial powers and the Indian subcontinent.

  • Portugal: The mother country whose currency designs influenced its colonial issues
  • Portuguese India: Goa, Daman, and Diu - the last European colonies in India (until 1961)
  • French India: Pondicherry and its enclaves - small but historically significant territories
  • Ceylon: Modern Sri Lanka, showing the transition from British rule to independence
  • British India: The vast British Raj, whose notes circulated across the entire subcontinent

What is Numismatics?

Numismatics is the study and collection of currency, including coins, paper money, tokens, and related objects. The word comes from the Greek "nomisma" meaning coin or currency. While coin collecting dates back to ancient times, the systematic study of paper money is a relatively modern pursuit.

Banknote collecting (also called notaphily) offers unique insights into history, art, economics, and technology. Each note reflects the society that produced it, from the choice of portraits and symbols to the security features and printing techniques employed.

Grading and Condition

Banknote condition is typically graded on a scale from Poor (P) to Uncirculated (UNC). The main grades used in this collection are:

Grade Abbreviation Description
Uncirculated UNC Perfect condition, no signs of handling
About Uncirculated AU Minimal handling, slight corner touches
Extremely Fine EF/XF Light circulation, minor folds
Very Fine VF Moderate circulation, visible folds
Fine F Well circulated but intact
Good G Heavily circulated, possibly damaged
