Gundam began in 1979 when the first episode of the anime aired in Japan. The anime was simply titles "Mobile suit gundam." This anime was about the conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon known as The One Year War in Universal Century 0079. The series starts when an Earth Federation base gets attacked by Zeon Zakus. The young Amuro Ray gets caught up in this and has to pilot a new prototype mobile suit known as a the RX-78-2 Gundam. Later on in the series Amuro has to fight the ace pilot Char Aznable which leads to a series long rivalry between the two pilots that ends with the movie "Char's Counterattack" in UC 0093 which released in 1988.

Later on, the series would become popular enough that Bandai, the owner of Sunrise who create Gundam, would start a line of Gundam model kits known as Gunpla. These became very popular worldwide and contributed to turning Gundam from a small franchise into a billion dollar franchise and even leading to it getting two 1/1 scale statues in Japan with the latest one, which replaced the old one, transforming every now and then.
