1. Which parts of today's activity were IaaS, PaaS or SaaS? Iaas : Because Microsoft supplies the underlying hardware infrastructure while the user controls the operating system and applications, any activity involving the creation or management of virtual machines, storage, or networks in Azure qualified as IaaS. Paas : Because Microsoft takes care of the servers, operating system, runtime, and infrastructure, students can concentrate on developing and deploying the class application using Azure App Service, which is PaaS. Laas : Software as a Service is an example of this. People use cloud based software tools like the Azure Portal or other things they can get to from their browser. The reason it is like this is that the software is hosted and maintained by the people who made it. So users of Software, as a Service only need to get to it. 2. Why does Microsoft offer a free credit specifically to students rather than everyone? Microsoft gives student credits so that students can learn and get good at using the cloud without having to think about how much it costs. When students use Azure they can learn about things that will help them in their jobs on as developers, engineers and IT professionals. If everyone got credits it would be very expensive and some people might take advantage of it who are not really trying to learn. Microsoft wants to make sure that students can use Azure to learn and get better at cloud skills. 3. If your class’s App Service had instead been deployed on a paid tier, what would you check in Cost Management to catch a billing problem early? In Azure Cost Management I would check a things. First I look at the cost analysis to see which services are costing money. Then I check the budgets and alerts so I can be notified when I am spending much money and it is getting close to the limit I set. I also look at the usage patterns every day or every month to see if there are any spikes, in the way I use resources. I check the resource details too to see which App Service plan or which resources are making the prices go up in Azure Cost Management. 4. Give one advantage and one risk of the Pay-As-You-Go pricing model compared with buying and owning physical servers. Pay-As-You-Go is a way to save money because you do not have to buy expensive equipment. This means you do not have to spend a lot of money at the beginning. You can make Pay-As-You-Go bigger or smaller as you need to. You only have to pay for the Pay-As-You-Go that you actually use. Danger: If you forget to turn off Pay-As-You-Go or if you use more than you thought you would it can get really expensive. If you are not careful, with your cloud service you might get a big bill that you were not expecting. You have to keep an eye on your Pay-As-You-Go so that you do not get surprised by a charge.
