According to Merriam-Webster, the word “leisure” means “freedom provided by the cessation of activities, especially time free from work or duties.” Oxford English Dictionary defines “leisure” as “time when one is not working or occupied.” However, the proliferating athleisure culture creates a dream realm made out of seductive products and recreational sports activities. Thus our culture nowadays equivalents “leisure” to a series of commodities and actives that economically and socially appropriate citizens’ free time. “Leisure” is now a duty fulfilled by consumption. One has to consume to relax; one has to work to consume; one has to work to play. The two installations in the Leisure Dilemma created by You Wu are inspired by these self-contradictory imageries of leisure presented by advertisements. You Wu (from Shenzhen, China) You Wu is an artist living and working in Baltimore, MD. Through a variety of mediums ranging from painting to sculpture to performances, their current body of work explores the problematic of globalization and consumerism. They have exhibited their works at VisArts (Rockville, MD), Terrault (Baltimore, MD), and Florida International University (Miami, FL). They have been a member of Current, a local alternative artist-run space, since 2017. Wu received a B.F.A in Painting with a studio concentration in Photography from Maryland Institute College of Art. They are currently an M.F.A. candidate at Towson University. 0 Central Florida Alligator Farm by Lindsay Bottos Home Central Florida Alligator Farm, 2017 Shot on 35mm film, printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 188 Warm Tone Fine Art Paper, and professionally framed in a wooden frame behind acid-free cotton mat and anti-glare museum acrylic Image: 25" x 26" Frame: 34.5" x 25"   Central Florida Alligator Farm by Lindsay Bottos $600.00Price ADD TO CART 0 Every nigger is a star by Diamon Fisher Home Every nigger is a star, 2020 Collage 16" x 20" framed Every nigger is a star by Diamon Fisher $400.00Price ADD TO CART Artist Bio My name is Diamon Fisher. I am a 24 year old mother, interdisciplinary artist, curator and herbalist. Born, raised and residing in Baltimore. My preferred mediums are photography and collaging. My work is typically Black and/or indigenous centered. Most of my collages are a compilation of scans from old 70’s ebony magazines and miscellaneous Black artifacts. Always looking to explore new mediums in the ever growing world of arts. When I’m not mommying or searching for new creative endeavors and outlets, I’m making herbal medicine for my family, and my community, gardening or spending time at my local farm learning from my partner. 0 Heat Rises by Monique Crabb Home Heat Rises, 2019 Plant Dyed Textile Painting 46"x59"   A personal and visual ode to our greatest mother, earth. All types of bodies are designed to fight back what’s causing them harm. The earth is no different. Nature can be fierce and chaotic and I believe she will continue to fight back if we don’t figure out how to live on her. Heat Rises by Monique Crabb $3,000.00Price ADD TO CART Artist Bio Monique Crabb is a Mexican American woman, a mother, and a multi-disciplinary artist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Currently pursuing her MFA at UMBC in their Intermedia+Digital Arts program and was co-director at Current Space for close to a decade. Monique’s interest in textiles, quilting and dyeing with plants was born during the early years of having a child. The desire to learn a new process that was meditative, low cost, experimental, and used second hand materials was very appealing. Over the years her practice has evolved into a deeper exploration of acquiring color from plants that she’s foraged for, grown, or made from food waste. All the while continuing to experiment with transferring color from plants to fabric with various techniques and exploring color, form, and text in her work that reference her personal history, identity, the body, and our environment. 0 Insomnia Drawing 452 by Bonnie Crawford Home Insomnia Drawing 452, 2020 Watercolor and ink on paper, 5" x 7" Insomnia Drawing 452 by Bonnie Crawford $250.00Price Framing Select ADD TO CART Artist Bio I am an artist and a mom living in Baltimore. The exhibition can be viewed from outdoors, through our window boxes along Howard Street. Opening Reception: September 5th, 6-9pm Exhibition Duration: September 5 - October 10 Description From the Arist For a bit too long Black Joy and Black Beauty has been placed in the background by society, as an ambient noise meant to be forgotten. We are often reminded of our plight and our struggles to be seen as humans and nothing less. This show is a celebration of black beauty. My goal with these charcoal drawings was to highlight the beauty in each figure, but also show a glimpse of the everyday struggle through their facial expression, lighting and titles. Planted by a stream of water, they never did what they utter, lost cost is what they called us, cursed by the sins of our fathers, like Ham, dang, Noah left a damned generation. But, imma celebrate my people, carving their faces in your mind with precision sharper than a needle, using color Dirt and charcoal, cause that's how they see us. I know Abba sees us, getting shot on TV by 12 cause they can’t rule us From the slang to the way we hang our drip, yeah, they want to be us. Durag, gold chain & hair scarf call us thugs, detained before eighteen Keep us in the system and maintained below the poverty line and in a death loop.
