I hope that this letter finds you well. The notification from my tutor concerning allegations of Academic Misconduct caught me with sheer surprise and shock. This is an issue that I do not take lightly at all given its gravity in my education. It is with deep concern that I am writing this letter to you to defend my innocence in the allegation pertaining to Academic misconduct. I have always strived to adhere to academic standards provided by the institutions through various codes such as the OIA, UK Quality Code for Higher Education, and QAA Guidance. Academic misconduct is unethical, a practice that I have distanced from in my educational journey. I would like to take this chance to clarify that I am fully willing to cooperate with the investigation processes to substantiate myself from these allegations. I would like to express my position in this investigation and support it with various excerpts from the report. To start with, the Turnitin report produced a similarity index of 42% which is higher than the 25% that my tutor indicated is the allowable limit. This is therefore in excess by 17%. The 17% is indeed a high index but from my standpoint and the requirements of the assignment, I believe that this will be accounted for. The requirements of this assignment required to follow a structured order for which a sample was used. The sample provided for the organization of the assignment, suggests various headings and flow of the entire paper. Thus I made sure to follow the key segments of the sample paper to keep my arguments within reasonable limits. As can be noted from the Turnitin report, sections and subsections' headings were highlighted which is shocking to me. In my experience with previous assignments where a structure of the paper is given and even a sample given to follow, it is rare to find the various subheadings such as (Title, Table of Contents Introduction, Body headings, Conclusion, and References) being highlighted. Furthermore, given the length of this paper and the need for several headings and subheadings which were mostly highlighted in the Turnitin, I believe these may have resulted in a higher report than it would otherwise be. For instance, in this image, even the Table of Contents was highlighted, as it was related to the structure of the related sample paper even though the content in the various subheadings is different. The assignment was also analytical, involving several calculations and table formations. As can be noticed general formats of the table such as headings were also highlighted repeatedly. For instance, the first in the first two tables of the Part A assignments as I have highlighted in this image, key headings of the table formats were highlighted. The highlights are repeated more than once for the same headings which I believe has contributed to the higher similarity index. The highlighted parts are not only in these two tables but in all the 9 tables that were used in part A of this assignment. These headings were from the sample and were only used as a guide for analysis. Thus I believe that they may have contributed to a high similarity index, which was not intended for any academic misconduct. Also, some elements of plagiarism that were highlighted in the executive summary were highlighted in the introduction part of Part A which may lead to a double highlight and increased similarity index. In the parts of the calculation, the report also seems to highlight most of the parts that were used for the structure of the paper from the sample. The sample paper was closely related to the assignment requirements. As a result, some of the calculation procedures and even formulas are similar to that of the sample. However, the focus of the paper was different from that of the sample but due to the similarity in some inherent elements such as calculation procedures and even formulas, the match was highlighted. I strongly believe that these circumstances may have led to the high similarity index of the Turnitin report. I appreciate and acknowledge the importance of academic integrity and I strongly believe that my case is not that of academic misconduct. I understand that it is important for such investigations to take place to not only protect the reputation of the institutions but as well as to maintain academic integrity. I also reckon that these investigations may help to raise awareness of the complex nature of academia and the ever-evolving issues and concerns. I firmly believe that this investigation will explore part of this issue and eventually help come up with a solution and a blueprint to guide one in a similar complex scenario. Thank you for your time and attention and time on this matter. I eagerly wait to hear your response and am fully ready to cooperate more on this concern.
