Welcome to my Supernatural horror film page! Below is a selection 10 supernatural films that I have watched recently (some more than once!) that I think any horror fan would find enjoyable. I have included some low key not widely known films such as Demonic and Devil that are great movies in their own way with plenty of atmosphere as well as known mainstream films from the Conjuring and Insidious Universes. Special mention to the movie Devil which straddles both the murder mystery genre and the supernatural genre and is a tense entry into the supernatural film catalogue. I would recommend that once you watch the below films that you seek out any further entries in their Universes and watch those too to understand the films in their entirety. In order to watch these films by clicking on the film image to the right of each title please ensure you have the relevant Netflix or Amazon Prime subscription. Please be aware that some of these films on Amazon will incur a charge to rent or buy the film. Please feel free to leave a comment or a request for any additional films to be added in the comments section at the end of my page.
IT (also know as IT Chapter One) is a 2017 horror film directed by Andy Muschietti and stars Bil Skarsgard, Jaeden Martell, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, Nicholas Hamilton and Jackson Robert Scott. IT is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name and tells the story of experiences of a group of young children (known as “The Losers”) during a summer in 1989 and their encounters with a seemingly supernatural entity who takes the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Skargard) and their fight to rid their home town of Derry of IT’s influence whilst fighting to survive. For some the subject matter is difficult to watch as Pennywise feeds on young children and the first 10 minutes during Georgie’s murder are difficult to watch however it is a very well made film and if you are a fan of Stephen King and this film’s source material then I can wholeheartedly recommend that you watch this movie via the link in the image to right.
IT (Chapter 2 is a 2010horror film directed by Andy Muschietti and stars Bil Skarsgard, Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Isiaah Mustafa, Jay Ryan, James Ransone, Andy Bean and features the original child cast of the 2017 movie. IT is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name and depicts The Losers, now adults, returning to Derry in Maine where Pennywise has returned and is now murdering more children and adults alike whilst attempting to entice The Losers to return so it can seek revenge. The original child cast have been artificially de-aged for this film but it works very well as they also had to try and make their voices sound the same as the 2017 film. The adult cast manage to successfully copy the performances of the children and one special mention has to go to James Ransone who portrays Eddie Kaspbrak – he is simply hilarious in his performance throughout the film! Annabelle is a 2014 supernatural horror film directed by John R. Leonetti. It is a prequel to 2013’s The Conjuring and the second instalment in The Conjuring Universe. It stars Annabelle Wallis, Ward Horton and Alfre Woodard and tells the story of Annabelle, a demonically possessed doll that attempts to take the souls of it’s owners. The film was inspired by the “Annabelle” doll that was in the possession of the Ed and Lorraine Warren and is said to be demonically possessed and currently resides at the home of the Warrens in a specially protected case. At the start of The Conjuring a short introduction sequence depicts the Warrens first encounter with the doll which occurs after the events depicted in this film. Like The Conjuring this film is creepily atmospheric and is sometimes genuinely frightening. You can watch this film by clicking the image to the right.
Annabelle Comes Home is a 2019 supernatural horror move directed by Gary Dauberman and stars McKenna Grace, Madison Iseman, Katie Sarife, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. It is the third film in the Annabelle film series and the seventh instalment in The Conjuring Universe. It follows directly on from the opening sequence of The Conjuring where the Warrens confiscate the Annabelle doll from the student nurses who were been tormented by the entity attached to the doll and take it back to their home to be sealed in their religiously blessed “museum”. Unfortunately their babysitter inadvertently unleashes the doll and other entities from the museum and chaos ensues. As the third entity in the Annabelle series it focuses on some of the other demons and spirits that the Warrens claim they faced and provides plenty of jump scares as Annabelle attempts to possess the Warren’s daughter. A good film and worth watching which you can do via the image to the right.
Insidious: Chapter 2 is a 2013 supernatural film and the second entry in the Insidious film series. It was directed by James Wan and stars Rose Byrne, Patrick Wilson, Lin Shaye, Ty Simpkins, Barbara Hershey, Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson. It follows directly on from the events of Insidious and depicts the fall out from that movie as Josh battles a malignant supernatural spirit that seeks to take control of him and carry on it’s murderous ways. As a sequel it follows the tradition of the first movie with plenty of jump scares and a much larger role for Tucker (Sampson) and Specs (Whannell) as they aid the family with restoring Josh to his former self. Whereas this entry in the Insidious series is a sequel the two films that followed are prequels and I would recommend watching them all in order. The Conjuring 2 is a supernatural horror film that was released in 2016. It is again directed by James Wan and is the second entry in The Conjuring film series and the third instalment in The Conjuring Universe. It again stars Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Madison Wolfe, Frances O’Connor and Bonnies Aarons. The film is a depiction loosely taken from the 1977 Enfield Poltergeist Haunting and features the Hodgson family who were supposedly the victims of a poltergeist which was conjectured to be a fake. The Conjuring 2 takes these events and adds in The Conjuring mythology and features the first appearance of The Nun – a demon named Valak that would later receive it’s own prequel movie. The Conjuring 2 certainly has more of the creep factor than the Conjuring and features an excellent performance by Wolfe whose character is the victim of Valak and the target of it’s attempt to take her soul.
