Visit Port Talbot

History

Port Talbot has a rich history. It has transformed into a bustling industrial town in the 19th century with the rise of steel and coal production. Its location along the River Tawe, with the development of docks and ironworks, made it an ideal spot for industry. The Port Talbot Steelworks, built in 1902, became a symbol of the town and remains a key part of its identity today.

Margam Castle, built in the 1830s and 1840s in a beautiful Victorian Gothic style, was once home to the Talbot family. The estate, which was originally part of Margam Abbey, was designed by architect William Burn. After being sold to the local council in 1977, it became a public landmark. Today, the castle can be viewed by visitors within Margam Country Park.
