There are thousands of slaves in the UK today. Modern slavery preys on the most vulnerable, and it starts with three little words – 'Want a job?' Your heart flutters; it sounds too good to be true. But you want to earn money, escape abuse, educate your family... So you say 'Yes'.
And then things change. You feel confused. There's less pay, more work, more control... Until there's no pay, and you feel trapped.
What do you see? The child asking you for money, or cleaning your car? The guy paving your drive, or picking your strawberries? The woman working as a maid, or in the massage parlour? It could be someone brought here, or the bloke next door.
You won't see any chains, because modern slavery doesn't work like that. It takes men, women, and children and makes them invisible.

If you are a member of the public, you can raise it with your Local Authority. Many local authorities have provided telephone numbers to, what they call, the First Response Team. You may also wish to simply call in to your Local Authority or the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) on NSPCC on their 24 hour Helpline: 0808 800 5000 (free from a landline) or text them on their Text helpline on 88858, this service is free and anonymous. Finally you can contact the police on their non-emergency number 101.
If you are a first responder you should follow the policies and procedures laid down by your organisation but definitely report it to your line manager and/or safeguarding lead at the soonest so that the proper referral, if so determined, can be made to NRM.

According to statistics from the Home Office published on the 4th November 2021, most victims referred as potential victims of modern slavery are are from the United Kingdom, Albania and Vietnam.
The current statistics note that the most common type of exploitation for adults is labour exploitation and for minors - criminal exploitation. In England and Wales and Northern Ireland a minor is a child under the age of 18 and in Scotland under the age of 16.
Between 1 July and 30 September 2021, 3,324 potential victims of modern slavery were referred to the Home Office through its National Referral Mechanism (NRM); a 6% increase from the previous quarter and a 33% increase from the same quarter in 2020, (NRM Quarter 3 Statistics from 1 July to 30 September 2019).
