In Week 1 of the Digital Skills module, I realised that my approach to organising files has mostly been based on convenience rather than planning. Before this week, I kept almost everything in the Downloads folder or on my desktop, telling myself I’d sort it “later.” During the activities, especially the section on digital organisation, I learned how much time I lose by not having a clear structure. One of the biggest takeaways for me was the idea that file names should communicate meaning. This sounds obvious, but I realised a lot of my files are named things like “doc1” or “final_version_NEW”, which isn’t helpful when I need them quickly. I learned that using consistent naming patterns — like including the module code, the week number, and a short descriptor — not only looks more organised but actually makes the files easier to search for.
