We are one of the few organizations in Baltimore focused in this way on mid-career artists. After six years of operating nomadicly, we have taken a permanent gallery location at 16 West North Ave as of June 2018, while continuing to work on site with artists in particular spaces. In addition to the programs listed above, we are also researching other ways that we can help artists build their careers. These programs include offering professional development opportunities and a studio residency program. We are committed to growing our programs in a smart and considered way, while remaining focused on our one-on-one work with artists. Tourism, the service industry, and the American dream serve as the framing devices for works that mine — and undermine — constantly shifting dynamics of power. This taxonomy of mundane acts plays with charismatic resistance to the neutralization and domestication of so-called lesser social actors as they work to hustle a new kind of truth. Allison Yasukawa Allison Yasukawa is a multidisciplinary visual artist and educator. She holds an MFA in Studio Arts and an MA in TESOL/Applied Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Chicago. In her studio practice, Allison explores themes of social encounter, the physical body, and the politics and performance of identity. Her work has been exhibited at spaces including Gallery 400, Chicago; NEXT Art Fair, Chicago; and University Galleries, Normal, IL. Allison lives in Baltimore and works at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Angela Conant | Angela Conant Deuteranope May 29 – June 14, 2015 ICA Baltimore at Gallery CA Deuteranope is a multi-media exhibition of painting, projection, sculpture, and installation. Works will be arranged according to their meaning in relationship to dark and light, inner and outer, consciousness and unconsciousness. Projection in an interior, dark gallery-within-gallery will serve as a false window to the outside/light space and will display narrative that fictionalizes the objects outside. Works on the inside of the dark space will be balanced on the outside by countering or opposing objects. The Deuteranope painting diptych series are each comprised of one painting made in full-color and a second painting which is formally identical but rendered only in colors visible to people with red-green color blindness.Other works are props for a fictional public access television program which abstractly and sardonically explores the decline of objectivity in popular news media. Contemporary television news is parodied through transparent application of humble materials. Angela Conant In her recent work, Angela Conant repeats content through paint, video and stone. Her videos incorporate sculpture and paintings and have parodied the politics of gender and media. Her practice also encompasses curating and collaborating on artist-run projects. Conant’s work has been exhibited at Electronic Arts Intermix (New York City), The Elizabeth Foundation Project Space (New York City), SPRING/BREAK art show (New York City), Glasshouse Projects (Brooklyn), Interstate Projects (Brooklyn), the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art (Wilmington, DE), Neter (Mexico City, MX), The Sunview Luncheonette (Brooklyn), ICA Baltimore (Baltimore, MD), La Mama Gallery (New York City), SARDINE (Brooklyn, NY), Galerie René Blouin (Montreal, QC), and Agency (Brooklyn, NY). She has spoken at Boston University's School of Fine Art and at New York Foundation for the Arts, and was awarded a Critical Writing residency at Recess (New York City) in 2013 and an Artist Residency at the Millay Colony (Austerlitz, NY) in 2014. In 2007, she co-founded The Gowanus Studio Space, an artist-run collaborative in Brooklyn where she served as Artistic Director until 2014. She earned an MFA from School of Visual Arts in 2013. Press Review by Joseph Shaikewitz in Post Office Art Journal Review by Maura Callahan in City Paper Download Press Release Antonio McAfee | Antonio McAfee Theme and Variation August 25 – September 23, 2018 ICA Gallery Theme and Variation is an exhibition of photographic collages that are based on re-imagining studio portraits of middle class African Americans from the Exhibition of American Negroes organized by W.E.B. Du Bois and Thomas Calloway for the 1900 Paris World Expo. This exhibition continues the visual transformation the figures have undergone for a number of years; in this phase subjects are transiting into abstract forms. Influenced by 19th century pseudo-sciences’ incorporation of photography and R&B, Theme and Variation expands the artist’s work into abstract representations breaking down simple reads and understanding of the figures. Theme and Variation is made possible in part by a grant from the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation. This is the twenty-sixth exhibition by the ICA since 2011. Antonio McAfee Antonio McAfee is a photographer based in Baltimore, MD. He received his BFA in Fine Art Photography from the Corcoran College of Art and Design. Shortly after, he earned his MFA in Photography from the University of Pennsylvania. In 2011, he received a Post-Graduate Diploma in Arts and Culture Management from the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa). His fascination with history, portraiture, and what makes up photographs drives his activities. McAfee has been featured in BmoreArt Magazine, The Washington Post, Washington City Paper, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Mission on Tenth published by California Institute of Integrated Studies, and catalogues published by the University of Pennsylvania and Corcoran College of Art and Design. He has participated in residencies at Can Serrat (Spain) and Vermont Studio Center. Antonio was awarded the Maryland State Individual Artist Award, Civil Society Institute Fellowship, Fulbright IIE Grant to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Dedalus MFA Painting and Sculpture Fellowship. Antonio is currently an instructor at American University. Press Ten Must-See Exhibitions in Fall 2018 by BmoreArt Exhibition Visit by Inertia Download Press Release Benjamin Kelley | Benjamin Kelley Floodplain May 12 – 28, 2016 ICA Baltimore in collaboration with the Icebox Project Space at Crane Arts Floodplain is comprised of two new artworks, one of which consists of fragments from a rare, early model F15 fighter aircraft reconfigured in the center of the gallery space. Encircling the chaotic composition is the second piece: a triptych of mechanized vessels producing an opaque tiding bath of iron oxide submerging contemporary relics of brand religion in order to create a buildup of rust residue on the once pristine objects. Benjamin Kelley Benjamin Kelley, driven by the smell of oak, the elegance of precision, and the cult of commodity, re-contextualizes found objects with altered and fabricated structures. His works have been exhibited both locally and nationally, including solo exhibitions at CONNERSMITH (2013); Open Space (2011); Patty and Rusty Rueff Gallery at Purdue University (2009). Group exhibitions have included those at The Contemporary Museum (2012), Maryland Art Place (2011, 2010), Gallery Four (2010), and Creative Alliance (2009). Kelley has been awarded the Toby Devon Lewis Fellowship (2010) and has been a finalist for the Janet and Walter Sondhiem Prize at the Baltimore Museum of Art in 2015 and the Walters Art Museum in 2017. His work has been featured in the Washington Post, Washington City Paper, and the Baltimore City Paper. Kelley is a graduate of the Rinehart School of Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Benjamin Kelley is represented by CONNERSMITH, Washington, DC. The Icebox Project Space The Icebox Project Space is an innovative and experimental contemporary exhibition space where visual artists, musicians, filmmakers, and performers are able to work, think, and collaborate within a uniquely large scale and open structure. The Icebox boldly explores the notion and limitations of what defines an exhibition and seeks to challenge and explore while fostering the creative process. The Icebox engages a broad national and international audience, and visitors should expect a level of engagement with programming, with the space itself, and with the community it continues to build. David utilizes the constraints of modest materials such as paper pulp, hot glue, and wood as a shrug towards the frenzy of new media. The results are intensely textured and colored paintings that present an iconography that slips between the contemporary and the archaic, the acerbic and the earnest. Body language, personal anecdotes, advertising and current events serve as a catalyst for studio activity. Onslaught of Obsolescence is an ongoing project that explores enduring (common) technologies that teeter on the threshold of relevance while also questioning the feasibility of maintaining a constant state of curated comfort. David Ubias David Ubias currently resides in Baltimore, MD. He received a BA in Studio Arts from the University of St. Thomas/Glassel School of Art and an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art. His work has been featured in the Texas Biennial, Art Miami, Vox Populi, Zona Maco, Texas Contemporary, and UrbanOutfitters. He is also the recipient of the 2009 Henry Walters Traveling Fellowship. Dominic Terlizzi’s paintings are composed from casts of food and eating accessories—bread, pretzels, napkins, and crackers. They are playful and inventive, while formally referring to modern painting traditions. This exhibition will be the eighth of the ICA Baltimore's solo artist project since its inception in 2012 and the second Free Fall Baltimore project. We deeply appreciate the support of our donors who make Free Fall Baltimore possible. Special thanks goes to the National Endowment for the Arts, the Maryland State Arts Council, American Trading and Production Corporation, The Abell Foundation, Henry and Ruth Blaustein Rosenberg Foundation, and Pearlstone Family Fund. Dominic Terlizzi Dominic has exhibited his paintings and sculptures nationally, including exhibitions in Baltimore, New York, and Washington, D.C. He has recently been awarded a grant to create a permanent public sculpture in Baltimore’s Remington neighborhood through the PNC Bank Transformative Art Project, organized by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts. As a young artist, Dominic contributed a drawing to NASA’s “Visions of Mars” project, to which the collected contributions now rest in a time capsule on the surface of Mars. Dominic’s exhibition through ICA will include work never before exhibited and will be his first solo show in Baltimore. Press Interview with Jascha Owens in Bmoreart Download Press Release Emily Campbell | Emily Campbell Imaginary Islands July 4 – 26, 2015 ICA Baltimore at Spacecamp Imaginary Islands is an exhibition of large-scale drawings and smaller paintings created by Baltimore artist Emily Campbell. This body of work features a series of disorienting and claustrophobic environments in which fictional characters engage in bizarre actions and rituals. Campbell’s imagery is collected from botanical illustrations, historical drawings, and appropriated ancient myths. In these dystopic scenes, new civilizations are imagined with inhabitants who participate in a range of provocative, sexual, and often humorous acts. These chaotic moments are countered by the precise and intricate lines, suggesting an elegance and order behind the depiction of irrational and inexplicable actions. Emily Campbell Emily Campbell is a visual artist and educator working in Baltimore. Campbell holds an MFA from the Mount Royal School of Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art and a BA in visual arts from Mercyhurst University. She has participated in several residencies including Vermont Studio Center and Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild. Press Review by Rebekah Kirkman in City Paper Interview by Rebecca Juliette in Bmoreart Top Ten Exhibitions of 2015 by City Paper Eva Wylie | Eva Wylie Down the Line June 11 – July 17, 2016 ICA Baltimore at Spacecamp Down the Line is a site-specific installation in which the artist prints directly onto the gallery walls and found materials, scraping, folding and making incisions as the printed imagery accumulates on the surface. Compressed conversations between nature and artifice, the organic and the synthetic, present and the past are at the heart of this work. An ambiguous iconography that combines remnants of family history, quotations, and screenshots entice the viewer to survey disparate times, places, and perspectives that sprawl across the gallery wall. “I attempt to balance the loss of an aesthetic sensibility in images of and from a disposable culture while, at the same time, working to reinfuse those images with elegance and beauty. Much of my work insists on its own ephemeral nature, celebrating its transience and perishability, while anticipating its own erasure: it will be painted over for the gallery’s next show”. But, until then, the installation will provide a means of exploring architectural textures, shapes and idiosyncrasies enlivened by the ephemeral beauty of a unique graphic dance. Eva Wylie Eva Wylie received her MFA in Printmaking from Tyler School of Art in 2003 and a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts grant in 2006. She has exhibited at Gallery Joe, Philadelphia, PA; University of Indiana, Bloomington, IN; Moore College of Art and Design, Philadelphia; Fleisher Art Memorial, Philadelphia, PA. Wylie has had residencies at Atlantic Center for the Arts, New Smyrna Beach, FL, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Graff Ateliers, Montreal, Canada, and at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, Maine. SiteLines is a translation of the artist's New Public Sites walking tours into a participatory video web series capturing the artist and walking tour participants as they playfully explore public space while he shares the sites’ histories, design, and uses. The ongoing New Public Sites project interprets the overlooked and invisible sites within cities, investigates the negotiable nature of public space, and pushes the boundaries of pedestrian agency. Filming for the first season of SiteLines began in September 2014 with four tours: Crossing the Highway to Nowhere, Reservoir Chill, Old Town Walking Revival, and Power Plant Alive! These collections of new public sites are connected by suburban style development in an urban context, including freeways and pedestrian malls. Videos from these walks will be incorporated into a larger installation of banners, photography, typography, found object sculptures, and a gallery-sized map. During the course of the three-week exhibition, Coreil-Allen will also lead three walking tours in collaboration with additional artists working in the surrounding Bromo Tower Arts & Entertainment District. Through a series of drawings, paintings, and digitally fabricated objects, Janet Olney asks viewers to navigate the ambiguity of the seen and unseen while grappling with the fleeting nature of perception. Using a language of abstraction and gesture, Olney remixes the various components to reflect on existence and the passage of time. Absence/Presence is the thirty-first exhibition by the ICA since 2011. Janet Olney Using a personal language of shape and color, Janet Olney reframes the familiar to reveal an alternate world populated with things that defy naming. Her paintings and installations investigate the realm of uncertainty that lies just outside our awareness: a peripheral world straddling analog and digital spaces. Originally from Boston, MA, Janet received her BFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art and her MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting (MICA) in 2014. She is the recipient of the Henry Walters Traveling Fellowship, a Marcella Brenner Grant for Faculty Research, and a Lucas Grant for Faculty Teaching and Curriculum Development. Press Studio Visit by Inertia Download Press Release Jason Meyer | Jason Meyer Westing June 22 – July 22, 2012 ICA Baltimore at D center Taking its title from an old word meaning westerly progress, Westing presents an early-career survey of Jason Meyer’s sculpture. Meyer combines intensive processes with his curiosity and material sensitivity throughout works that date from 1999 to the present. Utilizing materials that shift between human-made and organic, these sculptures explore Western culture’s relationship to the natural world. Antler, hide, and soil succumb to physical abstraction, rigid structure, and geometry while steel, electrical wire, and plastic are manipulated into organic forms. Meyer’s works examine our strange position among a world that we simultaneously study, define, deny, destroy, protect, and romanticize. Westing is the second of ICA’s emerging artist retrospectives which presented new works in context with rarely seen older pieces in order to reveal formal and conceptual arcs created over time. Jason Meyer Jason Meyer is a Midwesterner living in the East. After receiving a BFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he spent a decade in Chicago before moving to Baltimore. He has shown nationally in Chicago, Miami, New Jersey, Michigan, and Kentucky drawing reviews in Sculpture, Art Papers, and various newspapers. Strom Self/Non-Self: Recursive and Volatile November 21 – December 20, 2015 ICA Baltimore at Spacecamp Self/Non-Self: Recursive and Volatile is an exhibition of mixed-media works by Baltimore artist Justin D. Strom. Strom’s series Self/Non-Self investigates a deep curiosity of the human body, creating a digital landscape of our unseen inner-spaces by combining elements of the real with those of the imagination. Strom constructs an aesthetic based on the human form as it is simultaneously shaped by, and reflective of, our digital age; an age that attempts to dissolve the distinction between virtual and physical spaces. Engaging with issues of microbiology, cloning, and genetic sequencing, Strom uses a hybrid of photography, digital printmaking, and 3D composite imagery to build luminous 2D works. Dense abstract forms with no clear boundaries create an alternative interior with scenes of rich color, frozen explosions, and conglomerated forms that act as symbolic reminders of transformation and impermanence in a volatile world. These multi-layered works offer a microbiological investigation of forms in imagined space that revel in the structures and processes of the body by exploring it from the inside. Justin D. Strom Justin D. Strom is is a mixed-media artist, an Associate Professor in Printmaking and Digital Imaging, and the Graduate Director of the Arts Department at the University of Maryland, College Park. Born in Columbia, Missouri, he received his BFA in Painting at Columbia College-Columbia and his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Download Press Release Kirk Amaral Snow | Kirk Amaral Snow More Doing November 9 – December 8, 2018 ICA Gallery For the last decade, Kirk Amaral Snow has developed a body of work that investigates the relationship between the built world and performative aspects of culture. Drawing on an immediacy inherited from the DIY Punk scene, he makes simple, poetic objects that reference encounters with vernacular building as a contrast to highly crafted design. With More Doing, Amaral Snow digs deeper into the language of home-center improvement projects and YouTube “Do-It-Yourself” design. Displaying gestures and materials that echo and repeat, the works in the exhibition reveal a process of iteration and experimentation often absent from polished media representations of “making”. During the final weekend of the exhibition, Amaral Snow will situate his body alongside functional objects developed while making work for More Doing. The performance plays with Donald Judd's writings on furniture, using the artist's body to highlight issues in design and function. More Doing is the twenty-eighth exhibition by the ICA since 2011. Kirk Amaral Snow Kirk Amaral Snow (b. 1980, Providence) is a Baltimore-based intermedia artist. Download Press Release La Track / The Track | La Track / The Track La Track / The Track November 15 – December 15, 2019 ICA Gallery La Track / The Track is born from the will to build bridges between Montreal and Baltimore. Six multidisciplinary Canadian artists and collectives were invited to attend a 2-3-week residency at Pigment Sauvage between February and October 2019, that included a public presentation of their work at the end. Five artists from Baltimore were invited to attend a residency in Montréal in August 2019 to feel the vibe and be inspired by the city. The resulting work of these residencies will be showcased in two collective exhibitions: the first in Baltimore at the Institute of Contemporary Art, and the second in Montréal at Galerie B-312. This project, curated by Gabrielle Lajoie-Bergeron, aims to support a mixed-gender, multidisciplinary, multicultural, inclusive, respectful and open-minded program. Geared towards disorientation, rootlessness and encounters, the projects explore how the act of creation is affected by changes in scenery and culture. How can movement, shifting locations, and the unknown characterize one’s identity, whether it is cultural, historical, political, or sexual? What do we bring back, and what is left behind when we leave? A person? A state of mind? How do we mark our territory? What way of shattering conventions do we have? Making the limits undistinguishable? Blurring the lines? How do we (re)write history? To help the curious viewer, we’ve listed characteristics of particular groups of work, although this is not completely comprehensive or always accurate. For information on specific work please see our gallery attendant. Monotypes (1998-2000): Mostly single works, muted or earth-toned relief, intaglio and monoprints, generally abstract. Repetition projects (2001-2004): Many of the works containing multiples (targets, marks, peg grids) fall within this group, along with work featuring overwriting, modular units, and other pieces featuring repetitive marks. The slide projection area shows numerous works from this period that no longer exist. Accumulation projects (2004-2006): Much of this work has to do with depictions of piles, either in the form of photographic records of garbage, construction materials, etc., or as formal explorations of the idealization of accumulated materials. Some works (such as the ones on Charles and William Koch) address the excesses of specific accumulations of money and power. Fort Grunt (2006-2008): A full-time collaboration with Ben Fisher in Durham, North Carolina, all work from this period is attributed to the joint name “Fort Grunt.” This work is identifiable by its bright colors, imagery of infestation, disease, conflict and death rendered in a cartoonish manner and composes the bulk of larger works in the show. Middle States (2009-2012): The majority of this work consists of the framed and mounted pieces in the show, including the tent city paintings, drawings of cars on fire, superfund site woodcuts, cancer cell screen prints, and obsessive mark-making paintings in color and black and white. This work also includes all the large grey gradient paintings of disabled automobiles, prisons, landfills, and damaged buildings. The slide projector will be showing a rotation of works no longer owned by the artist, and work in this exhibition shown in its original context. This work is mostly from before 2004 (when the artist finally acquired his own digital camera), but also includes various earlier works including childhood drawings and perhaps an angsty painting or two from high school. The rear area of the museum features a photo grid, made up of images from the same pre-digital camera-owning period, mostly consisting of studies and research pictures of elements perhaps recognizable in the main exhibition. There are also several of many mail art collaborations with various artists, print exchanges the artist has participated in, and a vitrine with every journal and sketchbook kept by the artist since age twenty-two. Press Review by Andrea Appleton in Baltimore City Paper Lu Zhang | Lu Zhang topo(log) typo(log) November 12 – March 31, 2016 The George Peabody Library topo(log) typo(log), a series of six books documenting Lu Zhang’s yearlong studio residency at the George Peabody Library. Emulating the Dewey Decimal system of relative location, each book embodies a level of the library: General Reference; Biography; History; Language, Literature, and Translation; Science and Art; Bibliography and Books about Books. Readers are invited to navigate through the pages as they would move through the cast-iron stacks and narrow passageways of the library’s interior. Employing tasks common to a library of choosing, collecting, sorting, recording, transferring, scanning, and photocopying, Zhang reinterprets the building’s contents to create an associative and accumulative narrative that is specific yet arbitrary, expansive yet fragmentary. Gathering imagery from a wide range of sources including 18th century encyclopedias, architectural protrusions, guided tours, insurance maps, office supplies, renovation remains, and an essay on clouds, Zhang investigates the nature of work, the limitations of collective knowledge, and the poetics of place. Additionally, the exhibition includes a selection of books curated by the ICA Baltimore from the Peabody's collection in response to Zhang's project, as well as books from the Johns Hopkins Library and the Maryland Institute College of Art—further contextualizing topo(log) typo(log) within library preservation theory and contemporary art movements. November 19 – December 18, 2016 ICA Baltimore at Spacecamp Incorporating multiple video projections and works on paper in a wall-to-wall painted landscape, Who's Afraid of Magic? addresses extensive “witch” persecutions over a three hundred year period in Europe, drawing ties between these cruelties and the rise of early capitalism. Working from Silvia Federici's text "Caliban and The Witch," this multi-media installation questions notions of power as it relates to intelligence and bodies, fictions and realities, and the perceived threat of both imagination and magic. Video works include a ritual sacrifice of a human maypole and intimate, playful storytelling within a diorama of brightly colored small sculptures. Reed's DIY pop aesthetic mixes with painted images of medieval torture devices, asking us to connect the dots between historic and contemporary treatments of “other” and things we do not understand. Situated inside the dramatic architecture of a currently unused chapel in historic Lovely Lane UMC, this interactive environment explores the human endeavor to operate within a society which has distanced itself from nature in an ever-expanding manner. Utilizing an accumulation of handmade and manipulated found materials, Webb imagines a future where, in the face of deteriorating environmental and societal stability, humankind and the natural world learn new ways to thrive in symbiosis. Viewers are encouraged to consider their bodies in relation to objects and people within the space—alternately obscuring and revealing, isolating and conspiring. Press Review by Michael Anthony Farley in BmoreArt Download Press Release Really Large Numbers | Really Large Numbers From These Woods October 4 – 27, 2014 ICA Baltimore at D center From These Woods is an exhibition of projects, objects and ephemera. The titular installation is a series of animated videos that chronicles the story of a deer who can travel through dreams. Originally inspired by the true story of a buck swimming from Jersey City to Governor’s Island in 2010, Really Large Numbers reimagines the buck’s adventure as a celestial journey. The artists cast their own minds as the “islands” he moves between. The videos have a lively fairy tale structure. Each incorporates a mysterious, geometric teleportation device that allows the deer to move between realms and travel deeper and deeper into bizarre brainscapes. This and other projects showcased exemplify a persistent strategy of Really Large Numbers’ practice—fantastical interpretations of the natural world blended with empirical research of human relationships, communication structures, and symbols. From These Woods is the first installation by Really Large Numbers in Baltimore. Really Large Numbers created this work while participating in the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Swing Space residency on Governor’s Island in Upper New York Bay, and Artists Alliance Lower East Side Studio Program in Manhattan. Their work is supported by the Oregon Arts Commission in Portland, OR. Really Large Numbers Really Large Numbers is the creative expedition of multidimensional artists Chad Stayrook (Brooklyn, NY) and Julia Oldham (Eugene, OR). Stayrook and Oldham’s partnership began in 2011 when they encountered each other spontaneously as characters in dreams of mythic adventures. This dream thread led them inexorably to a collaborative relationship that combines science, fantasy and dream language to blur the boundaries between the Real and the Unreal. The exhibition is titled after a 17th century poem by philosopher and scientist Margaret Cavendish. Like a prism decomposes light into the many colors of the visible spectrum, this poem uses language to reveal the phenomena ruling the universe as an explorable array. The show regards the perceptions we have of natural forces and constants - gravity, the speed of light, magnetism - both as collective thought experiments and as individual linguistic experiences. Rodolphe Delaunay Rodolphe Delaunay is a French artist, born in 1984, and temporarily based in Baltimore. He graduated from Paris's École des Beaux Arts in 2008. Since then he has participated in several group shows in Italy, Indonesia and France and has had solo shows in Paris at Galerie Frédéric Lacroix and The Window 41. Delaunay's work explores the relationship between science and popular traditions. His sculpture, installations and movies are grounded primarily in readings of scientific history. He notes "Paradoxically, my connection to science arises from my own incapacity to understand it properly, and from the distance that separates me and my subject. I try to reproduce that distance in my works, juxtaposing everyday objects and scientific concepts, in order to produce questions about how we perceive the world." Click here to start your application. Emerging artists from the Baltimore area are eligible to apply. Emerging is defined as those having great potential but who have yet to be significantly recognized in exhibitions, critical reviews, fellowships, awards, publications, etc. Artists at least 18 years of age who have a current practice making work in an ongoing dialogue in the contemporary arts are eligible to apply. Currently enrolled students will not be considered. Participants from theBADAS program are not eligible for the current round. The application deadline is 3/31/2021 at midnight. Individual works from the BADAS program will be selectively highlighted throughout the year on our website, through social media (Facebook and Instagram) as well as shared as part of our press releases with our mailing list. BADAS works will also be accessible for browsing on our website. ************************************* The ICA Baltimore is pleased to present our first ever Baltimore Artists Documentation Assistance Session (BADAS). This opportunity is particularly meant for local and emerging artists without commercial representation, and will provide a new resource for exhibitions where artists and curators can connect and share. Next to the original physical work itself, good documentation is the best long-term investment artists can make in their art practice. Just because artists have strong work doesn’t mean that it will be perceived that way, especially if the documentation is lacking. Visual documentation will often be the only thing curators, writers, or grant panels will see of an artist’s work, and good documentation can mean the difference between getting a grant, securing an exhibition, or being rejected and passed over for opportunities. Documenting work properly is one of the most important investments artists can make in their career, however not all artists have the skills or equipment to document their own work well, or the resources to hire a professional to do it. BADAS allows emerging and under-represented artists to have their work documented professionally at no cost, and included in this online directory.
