Winter is Coming! And so is the Flu

With festive celebrations near, we are urging everyone to get their flu vaccination, even if they are generally fit and healthy. It will not only protect them from the flu, but also family members who visit or stay over the Christmas period.

Many will qualify to have the vaccination for free. Contact you surgery or nearest pharmacy for info. Many pharmacies and supermarkets also offer flu vaccinations for those not eligible for free immunisation.

Swansea Bay innovation benefits renal patients

The Renal department at Morriston Hospital have designed, built and deployed a fist of its kind Electronic Prescription and Medicines Administration (EPMA) module across the region.

Bringing digitisation to medicines management has not only improved kidney care across South West Wales it has also led to the Morriston Hospital-based renal unit reaching the finals of the NHS Wales Awards for patient safety.

For people with kidney failure, dialysis is a life-saving treatment. Paper-based prescribing is a logistic problem for the regional centre that covers a large geography across South West Wales. Digital records were far more efficient and could be accessed quickly anywhere across the region so information is accessed quickly and reliably where it is needed, regardless of where the clinician or patients may be.

Changes or additions to medication can now be made instantly at the main centre and immediately accessible to the nurse in the satellite units and there are no treatment delays. Going digital has made a significant impact on the efficiency, quality and safety of prescribing, timely initiation or alterations to over 5,000 treatments per week, administered against an ePrescription.
