The opening module in this course provided an overview of <glossary placement="bottom" content="Conducting research in a way that lives up to the duties and obligations researchers are expected to embrace.">good research conduct</glossary>. This module, by contrast, provides an overview of irresponsible research practices.

Some practices, such as fabricating answers to research questionnaires, are obviously irresponsible, but what about other irresponsible practices? What makes a practice irresponsible? Are all irresponsible practices equal, or should they be treated differently?

This module provides an overview of the ongoing discussion of the definition of, and appropriate ways of responding to, irresponsible practice in research. It covers:

The two basic ways in which governments and organisations have responded to misbehaviour in research

The definition of 'misconduct' in research

The definition and use of the term 'questionable research practices'

The steps that should be taken to avoid and report irresponsible behaviour in research.
