Whatever role you currently (or will eventually) fill in the research enterprise, society expects you to live up to the many obligations described in this course. Doing so is your primary responsibility as a researcher. The bar for meeting this overriding responsibility is usually set very high – by society, your institution and your professional colleagues. What matters most, however, is how high you set the bar for yourself (for a reminder of the responsibilities established in the UUK Concordat, see the "Additional information" pod).

Upholding the highest standards of rigour and integrity in all aspects of research

Using transparent, timely, robust and fair processes to deal with allegations of research misconduct should they arise

Summary

Raising the bar for responsible behaviour in research requires a joint effort by all involved: researchers, research institutions, research funders and the public. You should focus on where you can have the greatest impact. As part of this, you should:

Be realistic in planning your research and research career; do not take on more than you are prepared to handle

Get advice from mentors, institutional officials and colleagues on ways to deal with pressures

Report irresponsible behaviour when you become aware of it, making this your contribution to self-regulation and professional integrity.

Keep in mind that all of the shortcomings in research behaviour highlighted in this course would be less prevalent if everyone involved in research took their responsibility to self-regulate seriously.
