Managing conflicts of interest responsibly begins with identifying them. While this might seem like a simple task, it can prove to be more difficult than you might expect.

It is important to let others know about your conflicts so that they can judge how well they have been handled. You might think your interests have not influenced your work, but would others agree? The only way to answer this question is to disclose all the relevant interests to allow others to reach their own conclusions.

Definitions and examples

Financial conflicts of interest have historically been considered to pose the greatest threat to research. However, it is important to remember that conflicts can emerge from various different areas.

Any one of these interests has potential to undermine the basic responsibility researchers have to be honest, objective and reliable.

Summary

Conflicts of interest are unavoidable. Some are obvious and easy to identify (e.g. a researcher and their funder might stand to gain financially by coming up with the 'right' findings). However, others can be more difficult to identify. While your supervisor, mentor or colleagues can help you spot your conflicts of interest, the ultimate responsibility for recognising and disclosing conflicts of interests rests with you.
