What sort of data are you collecting and what methods are you using to analyse your findings?

00:00:05.600 --> 00:00:05.640
Valeria Scacchi, MA, Research Analyst, The Froebel Trust

00:00:05.640 --> 00:00:20.160
I'm looking at qualitative data and I'm collecting data through interviews and focus groups. And I'm using situational analysis to analyse my data. It's a spin-off of a grounded theory, so it's a way of reconceptualising grounded theory.

How do you measure/assess significance? Do you ever drop or ignore some data/findings?

00:00:25.480 --> 00:00:47.320
Valeria Scacchi: I don't really tend to assess significance because of the nature of my research. It's qualitative research, so it's really linked to the interpretation of the researcher. So I tend to look at the data in relation to the research questions and how the data will help me to answer the research questions. So, if you will, that's a way for me to assess the data.

00:00:47.320 --> 00:01:10.675
My method of analysis doesn't really encourage to drop any data. And because it's made-- you're basically looking at your data as a whole. And you need the wholeness of the data to then produce several maps that will show the context. And you really have to be open to unexpected findings. So really, dropping the data is not something that is encouraged in my line of research.

Do you consider different ways of interpreting your findings?

00:01:16.300 --> 00:01:16.360
Mate Subašić, PhD Researcher, University of Liverpool

00:01:16.360 --> 00:01:35.300
There are many ways you can interpret your findings, especially I mean, in all kinds of-- regardless of what method you use. And this has to do with your research question. It also depends on the research questions. It depends on the methodology you use.

00:01:35.300 --> 00:01:59.580
But you need to be aware of all alternative interpretations and you need to be transparent about that. You need to acknowledge other interpretations and you need to justify your way of interpreting data. That adds additional validity to your claims and to your results, and you need to be aware of that.

What do you do to try to avoid bias?

00:02:04.700 --> 00:02:04.720
Dr Clara Rubiano, Lecturer in Early Childhood Studies, University of Roehampton

00:02:04.720 --> 00:02:27.330
Presenting the findings, preliminary findings, with colleagues or perhaps with an audience in a conference can provide us with certain aspects that we cannot see from the inside as insiders. So outsider's view is important to avoid bias in this case.
