Briefly describe your collaboration and why it was felt that working in a collaboration would be more effective than working alone to resolve your research question.

00:00:06.600 --> 00:00:06.620
Mary Henderson, PhD Researcher, University of Roehampton

00:00:06.620 --> 00:00:39.650
My PhD is, working title, 'Into Individual Differences and Responses to Homeostatic Challenges'. So I come from a background of nutrition. And if you know anything about nutrition, I guess most, even everybody in the street will realise, that it's complex. One thing works for one person, but not for another. There's so many factors that go into it. So, it just is interdisciplinary by its nature.

00:00:39.650 --> 00:01:20.660
So, without too much trouble, I have to collaborate with other people because I'm having to delve in and use some sports science paradigms to test things out. I'm having to go, I'm interested in how cognition plays a role, so I have to go and speak to the psychology technician. And it's just impossible for me to become a super expert in all of these different things. So, then the beauty of it is then, so I do my research, and my review of the literature as best I can, but then I rely on a team of amazing people from different parts in the university.

How was information or data collected, stored and shared?

00:01:26.260 --> 00:02:01.750
Mary Henderson: When I've worked on very big, international projects, with several universities contributing or carrying out certain bits of the analysis, or different arms of the trial, it will be the chief investigator or the principal investigator, who will be storing that information centrally, and then you get dished out your access to your little piece of the puzzle that you're working on, as part of a PhD or a master student or a post-doc or research assistant, part of a big team.

00:02:01.750 --> 00:02:26.770
So then, it's really important to, although you feel very pressured in terms of trying to get the work done, you have to take a step back, and think about how it's getting stored and how it's going to be shared. And that if you don't follow things, and introduce some idiosyncrasies into that datasheet, it's just a nightmare for somebody at the other end to make sense of.

00:02:26.770 --> 00:02:32.930

Did the collaboration pose any administrative challenges, such as differences in regulations or hiring and accounting practices? If yes, how did you deal with them?

00:02:32.930 --> 00:03:20.890
Mary Henderson: I had to complete an NHS ethics application, which is a very involved task. And so, right from the outset, something very simple was in terms of who do I need to get ethics from, and how are those two processes mapping up? So the university said, hey, you don't need our ethics, you'll get NHS ethics. NHS ethics said, you have to get university ethics before you can get our ethics. So that was one example. And that required me, sometimes verbatim, to basically communicate, and pass on that information between the different offices.
