The field of research ethics, and particularly the need for research ethics committees and related codes of practice, originated in medical research. This is because, in general, medical research can present a high risk of physical or psychological harm. In addition, there are many cases where participants have died, or been abused, in poorly designed and unethical experiments, which were justified as attempts to improve medical knowledge.

Over the last seventy years, ethics processes have been increasingly adopted, and adapted, by other fields. Psychology and sport science in particular have developed a strong focus on research ethics, and all other research areas (including those where the risks are perhaps not as obvious) have developed increasingly robust processes to protect human participants.

This module provides a summary and brief overview of the basic responsibilities that researchers have when conducting research involving human participants. It covers:

Guiding principles

Types of review and approvals

Preparing for review

Ethical considerations

Continuing responsibilities

How things can go wrong.

Protecting human participants in research is a high priority for research programmes throughout the world. If you study or engage human participants in your research, you have a fundamental responsibility to know and follow all applicable global, national and local rules/guidelines. You are also likely to require further training before you are able to start your research.
