How do you choose what to publish and where?

00:00:05.700 --> 00:00:05.730
Caroline Morais, PhD Researcher, University of Liverpool

00:00:05.730 --> 00:00:42.090
I choose what to publish discussing with my supervisors and my team. I can see that also there are some interests of the community. Reading the journals, I can see where people are trying to find some answers. And it's interesting what to publish because sometimes you think that result is not good, but if you publish even the results and be honest about the results, maybe you're helping someone not to go in the same path, to do the same wrong things.

00:00:42.090 --> 00:01:13.650
So choosing what to publish, it's something with my supervisors and the community, when I talk with them in the conference, my community of research, they say. And where to publish, again, I rely very much on my supervisor's opinion. And the second, where the people I'm citing, the journals I'm citing, usually there is a trend. I can see the trend, or that journal maybe is where my community is.

00:01:13.650 --> 00:01:56.130
And there was an occasion, that I received an email, saying that my research was very good. It quite inflated my ego. I said, oh my god, those people already recognise my research. And then I sent to my supervisors. They were asking for a paper, to contribute in the journal. I didn't know the journal. I had never heard before. And I sent to my supervisors and they said, no, don't do that, this probably a predatory journal. So I was quite scared about that. I haven't heard about that before. So it's good to rely on the experience of the supervisors, always.

What was your experience with your first publication?

00:02:01.820 --> 00:02:54.420
Caroline Morais: My experience with my first publication was with a conference publication. So they are not rigorous as they are with journal papers. So when I started to prepare, I sent it, they asked me to change some things, and then they accepted it at the end. And when I started to prepare my presentation to the conference, I noticed an error. In my opinion, it was a big error, in the results, and that the way I've used the methodology impacted the results. So I was quite, what to do now because now the paper is issued, everybody must have already seen it. So I have to be honest with the people that are going to be there, to see my presentation.

00:02:54.420 --> 00:03:30.070
And so I've started the conference presentation with a slide saying there was an error with the results, and I'm going to explain what. So it's a very risky, but at the same time it was very interesting because people were paying a lot of attention, because lots of them are using the same methodology, and I could see that there were lots of questions, because they started to be concerned about if they were doing the same problems.

00:03:30.070 --> 00:03:47.740
And at the end, I asked the people in the conference if I could change the paper, substitute for the right one, and they accepted it. So I tried to be honest as much as possible with the people in the conference, the audience.
