Over the past century, society has become increasingly reliant on research to solve problems and make decisions that affect all aspects of life.

The fact that society relies so heavily on research to answer questions and solve problems makes it particularly important that researchers act with honesty and integrity. This module outlines the responsibilities that researchers have as they consider the wider context and application of their research. This wider context is often referred to as <glossary content='UKRI defines impact as "the demonstrable contribution that excellent research makes to society and the economy" (UKRI, n.d.).'>research impact</glossary>.

This module covers:

The wider roles that researchers fill

The different ways in which researchers interact with colleagues and the public

Strategies for public interaction

How to avoid bias

How to maximise impact with integrity.

If you are just getting started in research, figuring out how to handle research impact and public engagement might be low on your list of priorities. However, you might be surprised by just how significant these concerns become as you advance further in your research career. To prepare for this, it is important to be aware of your public responsibilities well in advance.
