Researchers have interests. You are probably researching your project because you find the topic interesting; you may also have personal reasons for pursuing your research. If you are still a student, you are probably interested in completing your degree and getting a job. Financial security and success could also be on your list of interests.

There is nothing inherently wrong with interests: researchers are encouraged to find their work stimulating and be successful – professionally, personally and financially. However, interests can become problematic if they lead, or could be perceived to lead, to bias. Although the term '<glossary content="A situation in which different interests could be or are at odds with one another.">conflicts of interest</glossary>' is often used in a negative sense, conflicts only really cause a problem if they are unidentified and not taken into account as you design, conduct and report your research.

This module provides a summary of the four categories of interests that researchers have:

Financial – interest in benefiting financially from your research

Scholarly – interest in sharing and promoting your research ideas

Professional – interest in getting support for your field of research and your position in that field

Personal – interest in matters extending beyond your work as a researcher.
