The use of animals in research is controversial. Some view it as essential to the advancement of knowledge for the benefit of society, while others consider some, or even all, animal research to be inhumane, unethical and unacceptable. If you are likely to use animals in your research, you must make sure you fully understand society's expectations for the care and use of animals. This requires you to be familiar with the regulations surrounding animal research, both at the institutional and at the national (legislation) levels.

This module provides a summary and brief explanations of the basic responsibilities researchers have when using animals in research. It covers:

Basic responsibilities

The 3Rs

General principles and guidance

UK national policies

Institutional programmes

Continuing responsibilities

Care and use problems.

All researchers who will be working with animals should be aware of the basic rules and best practices that have been established to oversee their care and use. Depending on the type of research you conduct and the animals you use, you may require additional training, as well as an understanding of the basic rules and best practices.
