Sooner or later, researchers are called upon to assume additional responsibilities – whether to their institution, their professional colleagues or society more generally. When this happens, you need to be prepared.

Responsibilities to colleagues and the public

The broader responsibilities that researchers assume over the course of their career are generally linked to service (i.e. the duty to help others). Some service roles, such as ones in mentoring and peer review, are closely related to your research and are covered in the module "Professional Responsibilities". This module is more concerned with positions you may find yourself filling in relation to:

Your institution

The professional community

Public organisations (such as government agencies and volunteer organisations)

Private organisations (such as businesses and other commercial enterprises).

Whatever opportunities you pursue in addition to your own research projects, you need to ensure that your integrity as a researcher is not compromised. Firstly, you need to ensure that you have the time to pursue the new role effectively without infringing on your ability to fulfil your other responsibilities. A second very important consideration is whether the role is paid or provides any other 'in kind' benefits (e.g. trips abroad, preferential publishing arrangements, or input into decisions that may benefit you in other ways), since these could constitute conflicts of interest.

Your broader responsibilities can sometimes turn into an alternative career path, and you could find yourself working as a laboratory director, corporate CEO or charitable organisation head, thanks to your research expertise. Research skills are highly transferable, and can be applied to more than just research projects.

Summary

Research is a complex professional area. Before long, you may find yourself taking on roles that extend beyond your own research. It is not uncommon for people who have completed their postgraduate degree(s) to move out of direct research and into research-related administrative or advisory roles. When this happens, you need to be aware of and understand any new responsibilities that come with the role.
