There is no point conducting research if the findings are not communicated. As an academic researcher, you are expected to disseminate your results; in many fields, this means publishing in peer-reviewed journals or books. The peer-review process provides a quality check of your work, giving other researchers and scholars the confidence to build on your ideas. Scholarly publication also plays a significant role in career advancement because it provides a record of who is responsible for new discoveries and ideas.

This module provides an overview of the best practices for scholarly publication. It covers:

Preparing to publish

Journal selection (including open access)

Drafting publications

Assigning authorship

Avoiding plagiarism

Submission and review

Post-publication responsibilities.

Along with best practices, this module also describes some of the irresponsible practices associated with scholarly publication, so you can remain vigilant and do your best to avoid them.
