As part of their training, researchers learn how to plan and then conduct a research project. This involves learning how to:

Carry out a literature review

Identify researchable topics

Formulate research questions

Devise a plan for answering research questions.

Past scholarship is accessed in different ways in different fields of study, since every field has its unique requirements for how research is to be planned and conducted. These skills are learnt as part of research training. If you are studying for a research degree, you will probably receive specific training and potentially even an assessment based upon research planning.

This module covers three general components of research planning that are common to most fields of study and can sometimes be overlooked. These include:

Developing a proper research plan</glossary>

Gaining the necessary governance approvals

Confirming professional and other agreements before a project begins.

Properly taking care of these responsibilities at the start of a project can save time and avoid problems emerging later (some of which are explored in examples provided in this module). It also helps to avoid the time and effort invested in research being wasted.
