Research is, first and foremost, an activity of the mind or intellect. Researchers solve problems and develop new ideas that may subsequently be used to create products. These products include technology (e.g. cars, computers, computer programs), books (which themselves contain ideas), and specialist ways of working (e.g. clinical or management techniques, educational courses). The area of 'intellectual property' (or simply 'IP') is concerned with determining who owns, and can benefit from, the ideas that underpin technology or knowledge.

Allowing researchers and research institutions the right to own IP encourages the development of new ideas, and incentivises putting such ideas to work. However, laying claim to IP can be very complicated and almost always requires professional help.

This module provides an overview of the responsibilities associated with the protection and ownership of IP in research, including:

Copyrights: The legal mechanism that protects creative works by controlling their distribution and copying

Patents: The legal mechanism that protects the use of inventions by controlling who can manufacture and sell new products based on the invention

Ownership and use: The practicalities of developing, sharing and exploiting intellectual property

Emerging issues: A selection of case studies that have triggered discussions regarding intellectual property.

The opening screens of this module introduce the general concepts of copyright, patents and ownership as they are used globally, before discussing the situation in the UK more specifically.
