The final part of this course changes focus, moving from the responsibilities associated with specific projects (from planning through to publication) to the broader responsibilities researchers have as professionals. These broader responsibilities can be divided into two categories:

Responsibilities to other professional researchers

Responsibilities to society.

While responsibilities to other professionals and to society increase over the course of a researcher's career, they can surface early (for example, postgraduate teaching assistants can act as mentors to undergraduates). In many fields, researchers routinely work in teams and collaborate. Research students, as well as established researchers, are expected to exercise social responsibility. Wherever you are on the research track, you must be aware of and meet your broad responsibilities – to other professional researchers and to society.

This module provides an introduction to five elements of professional responsibility:

Mentoring and being mentored

Working as part of a team

Collaborating with other research teams

Reviewing the work of peers

Communicating with professional colleagues.
