Content page Introduction Evidence Log of hours Introduction I have had experience in the health and social care as I studied it as an A level in college. Io have progressed in the health and social care sector through work experience as well as studying Nursing studies and health in university. I have gained a number of different skills that will help me when I become a registered nurse. I have also volunteered in two different settings but both involved vulnerable people and individuals with mental health issues. From this I have been able to interact with an array of people and get a better understanding of what it is like to work within the mental health field. Evidence I found it very difficult to find work experience and the time in order to complete the full 60 hours, as I have two part time jobs and I’m in university full time. However, previous to starting the Nursing course, I had already been volunteering for a local mental health organisation, Llanelli Mind. Where I organised fundraising events to help raise money for the centre, as well as helping with activities with service users. I attended the centre every Monday, Wednesday and other days I was not in university or working. I learned about a number of different mental health issues and how they affected each person, therefore gained knowledge and understanding about mental health. My organisational skills improved the most as I had to be on top of the fundraising and ensure everything was booked, leaflets were handed out, and raffle prizes were available. While an event was going on I helped with the raffle tickets and ensuring everyone was comfortable and money was being raised. I had to communicate with a variety of people such as, the people I was working with, service users, and anyone else that attended the fundraiser. his has helped me with my university degree as I had improved my knowledge as well as many skills that would help with exams and assignments. Volunteer work Mind- Llanelli- October 2017- July 2018 I have previously volunteered for a mental health organisation, that helps vulnerable people suffering with mental health. While volunteering in Llanelli Mind I helped organise and run many fundraising events, to raise money for the centre, to improve facilities and improve the classes available to the service users. I also helped the service users in arts and craft sessions as well as food and mood. As well as this I interacted with many different service users, with and array of mental health issues. This helped me understand and gain knowledge on the different mental health problems and how different people act with different issues. Personal statement I realised I had a growing passion for nursing after my grandad was diagnosed with cancer. I witnessed first hand the care he received from the nurses in the hospital, to the nurses that made home visits, and the support they gave to my family. After experiencing the care my grandad received, that's when I understood that nursing was the career for me. I believe that I have the right level of compassion to support each individual through the good times and especially the bad. I consider myself to be a hard working and determined individual who is always focussed and motivated in helping make others lives better. Last year I volunteered for a mental health organisation, the long established charity 'Mind'. Through my work experience I had volunteered at many different fundraising events to help improve the centre for service users. I attended the centre once a week, where I took part in craft sessions, and interacted with individuals with a wide range of mental health issues. I also took part in open days to promote Mind whilst also promoting other services. These experience helped me to prepare for the wide range of personalities and problems which may arise in potential situations throughout my nursing career. In my opinion, my A-levels choices reflected my passion for nursing, as they require hard work, dedication and the ability to work under pressure. From studying Health and Social care,I gained knowledge about the different types of caring skills needed for nursing.I am sure that many elements of this course will help me in preparing for a nursing career as they form major aspects of all nursing courses. In, studying Law and English, I also learnt a lot about personal management as they were very academic subjects that require you to meet important deadlines. I think that time management is an essential part of nursing, as you have to work to a strict schedule. Throughout studying Law it made me aware of the different legislation and human rights that people require and are entitled to.I have an understanding what rights individuals are entitled to while in different situations, while under your care in the hospital. I aim to apply the knowledge I have gained from these subjects in real life situations, which will help with the way I interact and come up with solutions. During studying English literature, I read different authors perspectives on the role of nursing in society. My A-levels helped me improve my ability to prioritise work, to meet deadlines and to have efficient time keeping skills. In the last year, I have taken a higher education course in Nursing and health studies, to help me have a better understanding of what skills and knowledge it took to be on a nursing course. While studying nursing and health, I have taken part in anatomy and physiology, which I have shown a great interest in. It has aloud me to gain an array of skills and a better understanding of the human body. This will help me in my nursing career as it is a major part of the job. I have also completed a communication and counselling class, which has aloud me to understand the different aspects that are involved in counselling. I have also researched many different theories that will be used in a nursing and health environment. I have achieved many different skills, and a better understanding of what it takes to be a nurse, throughout this course. I am very motivated and determined to achieve my dream career.
