THE EARLY NBA

The NBA was founded in 1946 and quickly developed into the biggest basketball league in the world. For many decades, it was dominated almost completely by American players, and the league’s identity was built on physicality, athleticism, and traditional styles of play.

During this period, international players had very little presence in the NBA. European basketball existed, but it was not yet seen as a major source of elite NBA talent.

EUROPEAN PLAYERS BEGIN TO ARRIVE

In the late 1980s and 1990s, European players started entering the NBA more often. At first, many people doubted whether they could adapt to the strength, speed, and physical demands of the league.

However, European players brought something different. Their games often featured high basketball IQ, passing ability, shooting touch, and strong fundamentals. That contrast slowly helped change how international players were viewed.

TONY KUKOČ AND THE SHIFT IN PERCEPTION

Tony Kukoč was one of the most important early European success stories in the NBA. As a member of the Chicago Bulls, he showed that European players could do far more than simply fill a role. He brought skill, vision, versatility, and composure to one of the greatest teams in basketball history.

What made Kukoč stand out was how modern his game felt. He had the size to compete, but also the ball handling, passing, and creativity that made him unique. He helped prove that European players could contribute to winning at the highest level and play a meaningful part in championship basketball.

In many ways, players like Kukoč helped open the door for future European stars by showing that international talent could thrive on the biggest stage.

THE MODERN ERA

Today, European players are among the best and most important stars in the NBA. They are no longer seen as outsiders or surprises. Instead, they are MVP winners, champions, franchise leaders, and faces of the league.

The rise of modern European stars shows how much the NBA has changed. European basketball has become a major part of the league’s identity, and its influence can now be seen in the skill, spacing, versatility, and global reach of the modern game.
