On new pages, this section is called General, but you can rename it to something more inviting, like “Welcome to [Module Name]” like in the example shown here.

Below this section, you’ll see tiles: these are where you add your materials. You can organise content into weekly or topic-based sections, depending on how your module is structured.

Course index

On the left, you’ll find the Course index. This gives a quick overview of all the sections and items in your course page, making it easier to navigate and jump to specific content.

Block drawer

On the right, you’ll find the Block drawer. Blocks are small panels that give quick access to useful tools and information. For example, you might see links to the Module Feedback Questionnaire, your Online Resource List, Microsoft apps and the DigiCentre. You can choose which blocks appear here to suit the needs of your module and your students.

Editing content

To make changes to your course page, switch on Edit mode by using the button in the top right. This enables you to add, move, delete, or update content. Any changes you make will appear immediately to students, unless you choose to hide the item from them.

To add content, go to where you want it to appear, select the plus sign (+) and choose Activity or resource. A dialog window will open, allowing you to choose what type of content to add.

Each item on your course page has an edit menu represented by three vertical dots (⋮). The ones you will use more often are as follows:

Edit settings opens the full set of options for an item. Here you’ll be able to update its content, change its name and description, set availability dates, add access restrictions, and set completion tracking conditions. Depending on the type of content, there may be many settings available. Use the question mark icon (?) for guidance on what each setting does.

Move allows you to reposition the item within the course.

Move right indents the item slightly to the right. This is useful for visually grouping related items or creating a hierarchy within a section.

Availability lets you quickly hide or show the item to students.

Duplicate creates a copy of the item. This is useful when you want to reuse a similar activity or resource without rebuilding it from scratch.

Finally, Delete removes the item from your course page. You’ll be asked to confirm before it’s deleted. Deleted items are sent to the Recycle bin, which you can find by selecting More in the top bar. If you delete something by mistake, you can restore it within 14 days; after that, it will be permanently removed.

To check how your page looks from a student’s perspective, use Switch role to… > Student from the user menu. This is a useful way to see what your students will experience. For example, students will see a lot less settings.

Course management

At the top of the page, you’ll see a row of tabs:

Settings, where you can change the banner image and enable Completion tracking for your page.

Participants, where you can find a list of everyone enrolled on the course, including students and staff.

Grades, where you can access the gradebook to view and manage student marks.

Activities, where you can access an overview of all activities in the course.

And More, which includes additional tools such as Reports, the Question bank and the Recycle bin.

So that’s it, a quick overview of the key parts of a Moodle course page.
