Concept Art

Who am I?

I am a 3D character artist and animator, I am currently studying a 3D computer animation degree. I have been learning to create concept art, create 2D model sheets, environment and character design. I have also been learning how to create 3D characters and 3D animation.

This website is dedicated to show case my work during my years in university, which also involves my current project that is under production. In my first year, I have worked within a team such as ‘Saving 2D’, working with Liam Coghlin, Kenny Hill and James Goodey. I worked as a concept artist creating an image based upon Ghibli films, where I learnt Hayao Miyazaki style. However, my art work needs improvement in a professional manner, providing different designs and poses. In my first year, I also developed a 3D animation involving a cyborg. Due to being inexperienced in developing 3D characters, I had not built this short 3D animated clip to a professional standard or shown development of the character design. The character could have been improved by the design and in the modelling stage. The animation of the character needs to be adjusted to a smoother walk, by moving the hips so it adds more weight to the feet as they hit the ground.

I had also developed concept art for a 3D short film project, ‘Harmless’. This story is based on mice escaping an experimental laboratory with a cat, Donnie, two mice, Jeff and Pip. It is a story based upon character and being kind. I developed this story using concept art and a Leica reel. The Leica reel could be improved based around showing different expressions. The quality of the clip needs to be improved, where there should be cleaner cuts around the character. The 3D short film for this project was unsuccessful due to inexperience and due to my lack of knowledge when it came to texture the character and props at the time.

In my second year, a few 3D short animations were made based on free running, pain, afraid and lip sync. The clips of the animations follow basic animation principles. However, these animated clips need improvement on the basic movements of the arms and facial animations.

In my third year, I worked on an animation progression reel, where I was able to develop a fully animation of a character getting shot in a few seconds. The progression reel showed my development and process from block out stages to a fully animation sequence. I found the process I used before in the second year helpful and proceeded to use it to help me make an animation with more facial animations.

I had worked in a team, which is called ‘Exodus’ and I worked on the 3D animated short film, ‘Double Justice’. I worked with Joe Long, Kenny Hill and Kane Morris. It was a group project based on a western style animation. I worked alongside the team, developing the storyboards, character designs for Buck. I modelled, textured, rigged and animated the character, Buck. I had also, made the gun, Colt 1889, for the other character, Jack and several other props.

Overall, I have improved significantly compared to my first year and second year as I developed an understanding of the 3D pipeline. I have also built new skills based on modelling, texturing, rigging and animating.
