About Kali Linux
Offensive Security maintain and fund the open source project that is Kali Linux (formerly known as BackTrack). Kali is a Debian derivative Linux Distribution that is designed for Digital Forensics and Penetration testing. It has earnt itself the nickname "The Pentesters Swiss Army Knife". Kali is not recommended to be installed by beginners as their primary desktop operating system as it runs as root by default which means critical files can be destroyed if the user isn't careful, and networking is disabled as default to keep the Os as safe as possible. It is however safe for the beginner to use running a virtual machine with software such as VMware or Virtualbox.
