The Beginning
Alfred B. Arkwright was born in 1935 and worked as a saleman for different companies, selling items from paper cups to pens and pencils. Using his clever sale techniques, Arkwright continuously posted record sales volumes. Despite this, Arkwright was not content with making money for others and wanted to branch out to forge his own path and future.
The Humble Shop from the North of England
In 1972, Alfred Arkwright discovered an empty corner property in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, and envisioned a shop where all customers could purchase not just everyday household groceries such as milk, bread and baked beans, but household items such as dustbins, brooms and storage tins. For Arkwright, this diversification and vision would allow him to sell almost anything to anyone, especially with his saleman background.
Following the store purchase, Arkwright opened his first shop in 1973 under the name 'Arkwrights' and remained the shopkeeper until his death on 23rd July, 2015. The shop still remains open for business to this day, continuing to diversify and sell different products under the ownership of his nephew's son, Larry Granville.
The Online Shopping Revolution
Following the online shopping revolution of the past decade, Alfred's grandchildren, Amy and Jonathan, decided that in order to survive and expand Arkwrights, they had to explore the opportunities available in the online world. As part of plans to bring Arkwrights online, Amy and Johnathan offically founded Arkwrights Shopping Ltd and officially opened Arkwrights to the online world on 4th January 2022.
