I have found 2 reviews of Matthew Champion’s book and they are written by William Anderson and Thomas Wozniak. Anderson’s general opinion of the book is a good one and he feels that the positives outweigh the negatives; one of the strengths being the fact that there are almost no bibliographic references which means that the information is presented in a clear and simple manner and the reader’s attention is not diverted by such references. He feels this makes it an accessible read for all levels of reader, but also that this same point is a weakness of this book, as the lack of bibliographical references will hinder the enquiring reader that wishes to read further on the subject. Wozniak feels that the book affords a clearer view of why graffiti; art works in various forms, is etched into the fabric of churches, and what it can tell us about the lives and beliefs of the people that put it there. His view is that the book is well sourced with original pictures, although yet again, that it is Champion’s failing to provide a bibliography that is one of the book’s weaknesses, which could be disappointing to the more enquiring mind.
