The role of a camera operator essay

Introduction

According to Pattanayak et al. (2018), a camera operators job is to work with the director to determine the overall vision of the production. The authors skill development programm discusses filming and editing techniques for improving cinematic scene making and framing of shots, also describing the complexities of utilising storyboards. Camera operators must understand the intricacies and capabilities of their equipment to properly utilise it, meeting the directors requirements and vision where possible (Pattanayak et al., 2018). The complexities of production and the variety of film and T.V. settings require high standards from camera operators, for instance: live productions differ from pre-recorded materials and require different equipment and skills to achieve the best outcomes (Pattanayak et al., 2018). Particularly complex are productions that will be utilising post-production VFX where footage must be exact and leave space and context for additional FX to sit within the scene, creating believable and impactful results (Chabanova, 2022) The authors also note the additional stress and pressure on people working within VFX because of the requirement for maximum output and efficiency.

Physically, camera operators jobs are demanding, described by Asfour et al., (1988) as heavy work, based on physiological cost to the individual. Advances in camera technology have meant a reduction in size over many generations of devices, however, many modern cameras now have the capacity to switch between modes for a variety of purposes, and have numerous built in features that limit weight reduction capacity (SMPTE, 2024). In addition to this camera operators may also require a variety of other tools and equipment that must be utilised and transported to filming locations, allowing them to adapt technique and methods to best fit on site locations (Robles, 2024). This essay will look at the role of the camera operator within the UK film and television industries, reflect on personal work experience, and explore recent developments in AI and how they may impact camera operators.

Film studios in the UK

There are a growing number of filmmaking studios within the UK (Knight Frank, 2023). According to the British Film Commission (2024) there is an adequate network of studio space within the UK to accommodate any size or scale of feature film production, this network is conveniently located around major hubs of film production providing access to supporting infrastructure and technical crew facilities. Knight Frank (2023) also lists numerous new studio developments under construction due to the rise of media streaming platforms and the investments they are making in production of their own materials.  Pinewood studio produced numerous Hollywood blockbuster films (Pope, 2023).

Warner Bros studio near Watford which created Wonder Woman (Patty Jenkins. 2017 ) Justice League (Zack Snyder, 2017) Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (David Yates, 2016) amongst other major blockbuster films, and Longcross studios where Skyfall (mendes. 2012)  Guardians of the Galaxy (James Gunn, 2014) Avengers: Age of Ultron (Joss Whedon, 2015) and some Marvel movies where made and the ! their is also the Black Hangar studio which has the biggest greenscreen in the UK and Rogue One star wars film was made their.  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (James Gunn, 2017)  Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Gareth Edwards, 2016). The UK film industry is flourishing with numerous blockbuster productions and large scale studio venues available to the film industry (Knight Frank, 2023).

What is the difference between a cinematographer and a camera operator

Historically, camera operators emerged from early news reporting with still images and early video footage filmed to objectively report information, with emerging technology and the advent of cinema cinematographers began directing camera operators to try to capture their vision and convey emotion to tell a story (Kline, 2024). More recently the roles have become more nuanced with advancements in technology that have blurred the lines between video and digital cameras (Kline, 2024). The objective is now of primary importance, if you want someone to report and show what you are filming "as it is" a camera operator will do the job, however, if you are trying to tell a story and convey emotion to viewers then a cinematographer is required to direct camer operators and supporting crew so footage meets their vision (Robust Creative Solutions, 2023). A camera operators job is to be responsible for the camera and capturing the footage, a cinematographer works closely with the director to focus on artistic and technical aspects of the filming process. Camera operators are directed by the cinematographer to capture footage according to the cinematographers instructions, working together with the cinematographer to achieve the aesthetic style wanted by the director (Robust Creative Solutions, 2023).

Interview

 Rhys Bevan
Work with AI not against it as it's not going away. We been using super computers that almost been doing the same thing. embrace it but be careful like any new technology.

indie  studios are important to have because they have more creative freedom compared to big budget studios which have investors to make happy when big studios are important for small studios to learn from and we got to keep the small indies else everything will look the same.

asking people with more expereince for feedback and help is good and the worst could happen is they just wont help.

It will take a few tined to get a job don't worry about it take ur time.

How is AI affecting camera operator job roles?

AI technology has ushered in a new era of technologies for camera operators with numerous tools for post production rendering and fixes for various raw footage issues, including deblurring, dehazing, contrast options and VFX becoming increasingly utilised in the film industry (Anantrasirichai and Bull,2022). Other developments such as camera tracking utilising AI robots can revolutionize content creation for small producers and is becoming a built in technology for streamers and presenters, enhancing output quality, and making unique content creation available for solo users (Fteiha et al., 2024).
Paulson (2023) discusses camera operator roles and whether advances in AI will impact on these roles in the future, he argues that various benefits will lead to increased consistency and precision and enhanced creative potential for camera operators. Automation of once complex tasks allow operators to experiment creatively, however technical limitations of AI are the extensive training and fine tuning of these systems and is not a replacement for operators who need to oversee to ensure desired outcomes are met (Paulson, 2023). Firesight (2024) also notes the requirement for operators to adapt to AI, oversee AI tools for film production and use AI to streamline their job so they can focus on creative storytelling aspects.  the automated cameras in the bbc news studio which where introduced into the studio in 2013 was done to cut jobs and to save the studio money which cut 70 jobs in a way to cut jobs so interesting to see how fast the industry changes (deadline. 2022)

Famous camera operators/cinematograpthers and their career

Roger Deakins

Roger Deakins a famous British cinematograpther known for their work on films like  "No Country for Old Men"  and as well "Skyfall" and the amazing film "1917" their career has spanned over three decades and has got many awards for this work and is highly respected in their field (IMDB, 2022a). Roger Deakins also provides resources for teaching such as the video Roger Deakins on "Learning to Light" by  StudioBinder giving great free knowledge (Class Central, 2024). This knowledge sharing also is apparent on Roger Deakins personal website, where he breaks down previous works and discusses techniques and choices made for cinematic impact, helping others discuss and learn from his experiences (Deakins, 2024).

Robert Rodriguez

Robert Rodriguez who is the the grandfather of low budget films and has made great films in their early career such as "El Mariachi" (1992) the movie who first put them on the map with the 7k budget and "from Dusk Till Dawn" (1996)  and more modern famous films such as "Machete" (2010) and Sin City (2005) (IMDB, 2023). Robert Rodriguez  is a great teacher they created the  awesome book "Rebel Without a Crew."  that is a awesome book to learn from to make a full feature film on a low budget and tells the problems they faced while making the film El Mariachi (Carlin, 2021).

Rob Zombie

Rob Zombie is a musician that made the great song that has been featured in many horror films their song "Living Dead Girl" has been in populer early 2000 movies  such as "Ghost Ship" and "The crow" they are extremely educated in horror media and has only been working on horror related media such as their music and their films such as the  remakes of the Halloween franchise movies and "The Devil's Rejects" (2005) (IMDb, 2022b). Zombie advocates for finding your own voice in film making and be resilient and also directs their own music videos which you can see their own unique voice such as random but planned vfx such as the oblious not a real car driving but instead of hiding the fact the car isnt real they turn that into part of the art for their music videos (Beyl, 2021; Beebe, 2021).

What is the career path of a camera operator?

Often beginning as camera assistants, with higher level qualifications in photography, film/TV or media, or starting as freelance camera operators, experience is essential to the role and production footage serves as a portfolio for potential employers or clients (Careers Wales , 2024). According to Planit (2023) 54% of people employed as camera operators have university level education Degree or postgraduate degree. Competition for these roles is usually fierce so professional qualifications, high levels of experience, and a portfolio with unique and interesting work can make potential camera operators stand out to employers and clients (Careers Wales, 2024). Careers Wales (2024) publishes information from Lightcast, a labour market analytics company, showing that 1830 people are employed as camera operator or related jobs in Wales, projecting a medium future demand for these roles with 97 new jobs yearly until 2028.

Experience is the most important thing to develop at this stage applying for and offering my services whenever possbible to increase my knowledge, experience and portfolio of work, improving my chances of being considered on my ability in conjunction with professional qualifications and knowledge.I should consider all roles as potential experience opportunities, including commercials and possibly considering freelance work to increase output and experience. According to Planit (2023) employers rarely advertise camera operator jobs and entry level studio jobs can create opportunities for camera assistants and operators to start a career in this field. Commercials are an ideal route into gaining experience in camera roles especially with social media and spec adverts growing in popularity and reach, and noted by major companies as a way to capture potential audiences (Dwiveli et al., 2021), this is a growing industry that future camera operators could benefit from. A social media advert for Tovali Drinks Company in Carmarthen Wales allowed me to see the importance of social media advertising campaigns as a route into camera operator roles within the TV and Film industry, allowing me to expand my portfolio and gain essential experience.

Their are many different type of job roles for me to go into such as freelancing or working such as tinopolis in llanelli that is the biggest film studio that is local to me it has many universally known shows such as "American NInja warrior" as well as "Top Cheif" as well as making Goverment Propaganda such as "Kate: A Queen for the Future and Prince George: A King for the Future". (Tinopolis, 2019) (libapps.salisbury.edu, n.d.) while their are less jobs in Wales for film making that specifically focuses on films compared to London their are much more film making jobs then it looks like by just looking at the main big film studios Knight Frank (2023) their are a lot more jobs if you get into advertising making commercials for companies that aren't on their own a film studio such as Au Vodka in Swansea and Football clubs as well their is also Freelancing and being hired to film stuff this could be for big events and weddings while most people get bored of wedding Photograpthy it does pay very well and is a great way to start off a career.

Difference between tv and film camera operator roles

the main differences between a tv camera operator and a camera operator in a studio enviorment working on films and TV is that studio based films have full control on what happens whithin that space and more scripted when a TV news on location camera operator will frequently need news that is relating to fatal car crime such as cars ramming into pedestrians, crime such as robberies and murder while also recording positive stuff like charity events this will cause a lot of trauma for the camera operator recording news related stories compared to the more safer inside studio environments however their will still be problems in a studio enviorments for camera operator such as long hours and very hot studio lights and due to the more scripted nature of tv and movies inside studios this requires more information to be able to setup a shot and more meetings leading up to the filming in a sound warehouse enviorments

MacDonald, J. (2017). A Focus on Exposure: Trauma and the psychological implications for TV news camera operators.

My running experience

I have worked on the e sports event s4c november 25th  and setting up a conference on the 27th for the NHS conference this includes things such as moving tables around and prepering the room as well as making sure the livestream is correctly working and disesembling the hydraulic steps that chairs sit on to convert the room from the e sports event to turn it tino a room for a large conference room during this I also lifted heavy stuff around such as ladders and stair barrriers for the hydraulic stairs as well as setting up audio and making sure the livestream audio works.

Conclusion

AI is unavoidable in the modern world and advancing rapidly, bringing new developments in technology and capability across many areas. In terms of camera operators, AI has brought vast advancements to affordability and capability of equipment, meaning non-professionals can attain very high quality footage without the entourage of crew and staff necessary in the past and less repetitve procedures for production as camera evolve to incorporate AI. With these advancements and the growth in social media and content produced independently, users can now produce studio quality footage and have more creative control over the content they produce.   I have discovored that the role of a camera operator changes constantly and so far AI has only served to streamline the job of camera operators. Concerns over AI and replacement of these job types is so far unprecedented and operators are still required to oversee and ensure artistic and creative direction meets the needs of the director. The future may change and camera operators must change with advancements in the field, carving out a niche where they are necessary and essential to the film production industry.
