OLD Project - Viking by Michal Hagovsky

Critical Review

My First Character model, and thus the anatomy is not the greatest, even though it s mostly covered by clothes. The shoulders are too wide, and the torso is rather flattened tube, rather than having a proper shape. Beard is simply sculpted. The model was no UV Unwrapped properly, or retoplogized, making the UVs a set of patches from decimated topology. Durin the shading, some errors occured with incompatibiliy of the texturing workflow and renderer, overly darkenin his skin, and rendering few maps unusued.

During the project, we definitely bit off moe than we thought we could handle, I could handle. For example, his pelt should have been fur and animated. Also, it was my first run in with texture baking, therefore a lot of the maps did not come out as nice I hoped they would.

Meet_Mat Number 2 by Michal Hagovsky

A piece that I made for the Meet_Mat Allegorithmic challenge. I was inspired by Shane Acker's 9. Unfortunately, I did not manage to submit it on time, but I still had plenty of fun, figuring out how to properly alight the stitching, burlap and where to put dirt.

Due to taking part in the contest, I found out that its very beneficial to take parts in contests and challanges. Not only does it give you a chance to take on a project under some lenient rules, bu it also lets you practice, learn new methods, learn from other people doing the project as well and possibly scoring some recognition.

Simple Gothic Gate by Michal Hagovsky

Even though it is a subdivision surface, I would very much like to take it into Zbrush and remake the model. Making it again, I'd make the iron more wrought like, make the wood more weathered. This is one of the assets that would certianly benefit from sculpting, but I will have to try that in the future. UVing was rather simple, although I am not ye sure how exactly to approach some circular objects, which drastically change their shape from hexagonal to circular when smoothed.

Torii by Michal Hagovsky

The idea of this gate started a bit more ambitious, I wish I had more time to texture, add some decals, dirt, sprays and posters. The base materials are in place, but to my taste it looks like made out of paper.

Modeling process was similar to the gun, although including a bit more guesswork as I could not find the process Traditional Torii gates are constructed, and japan is known to posses very interesting wood joinery. Since I modeled with subdivision surfaces, my expertise in creating a proper flow around circular places created few smoothing artifacts around some insets and circular parts, but they are rather invisible unless closely inspected. Still, I'd very much prefer it to be without.

As with the gun, the model is comprised of multiple objects and UDIMs

Critical Review

I usually don't model guns, so this was quite a challenge. I chose to go with Subdivision surface workflow, even though I was quite new to it. Matching reference was quite a problem, as there were multiple models and not every was properly labeled, also I did not find any orthographic pictures, therefore a lot of the model depended heavily on guesswork, which I am not very happy about. Only parts of the model I am not happy about is few deviations from the real life example, rerouting few edge loops which do not look too great, and also dependency on Maya's crease function in some places.

Another new experiment was splitting the model into multiple pieces for animation, and multiple UDIM Shells for shading and texturing.
