Activity 1: Reflection

The UN SDGs define sustainability as balancing economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection. Critical academic sources argue that standard definitions focus too much on continuous growth and ignore ecological limits.

They differ because the UN focuses heavily on social and economic development alongside the environment, while critical views emphasize that current economic models exploit nature and fail to fix inequalities.

Sustainability is a contested concept because governments, companies, and activists have different goals and values. There is no universal agreement on how to balance human needs with limited planetary resources, making it a constant debate.

Activity 2: Sector Sustainability Challenges

High Energy Consumption: Universities use huge amounts of energy for buildings and labs. (Pillar: Environmental)
Mental Health & Wellbeing: Academic pressure and workloads cause burnout for students and staff. (Pillar: Social)

Car Valeting Sustainability Activities: Cardiff

Week 1: Understanding Sustainability

The UN view of sustainability focuses on meeting present needs without harming future generations. It tries to balance environmental protection, social fairness and economic growth. A more critical view argues that sustainability can become a marketing idea if businesses make small green changes without addressing deeper environmental and social problems.

The main difference is that the UN approach is practical and optimistic, while the critical approach questions whether economic growth can continue within environmental limits. Sustainability is contested because businesses, governments and communities have different priorities. In my view, useful sustainability should create real change rather than only improve an organisation’s image.

Week 1: Car Valeting Challenges

• High water use: Traditional car washing can use large amounts of water, which creates an environmental concern.

• Chemical pollution: Harsh cleaning products can enter drains and damage rivers, soil and wildlife.

• Working conditions: Some workers may face low pay, long hours and limited employment protection.

I chose the car valeting sector in Cardiff because it supports local jobs but also creates environmental challenges. I want to explore how small businesses can reduce water and chemical use without making their services too expensive.

My Chosen Community

Hi everyone!

The community I've chosen is my local neighbourhood in Romania .

Why I chose this place:

I've lived there for most of my life, so I know it well. I see the good things—like the local school, the market, and the park where families gather. But I also see the problems every day:

· Some streets don't have proper rubbish collection, so waste piles up

· The local school is overcrowded and doesn't have enough computers

· Many young people move away because there are no jobs nearby.

I chose this community because I actually care about it. It's not just a case study to me—it's home. I want to understand its sustainability challenges better, and maybe think of real solutions that could help the people living here.

I'm looking forward to reading about everyone else's chosen communities!
