by Verginica Ghervase.

1.

Sustainability means meeting our needs today without making life harder for future generations (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987). The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 goals that aim to improve people’s lives, protect the environment and reduce poverty (United Nations, 2015).

The main difference is that the Brundtland Report explains the idea of sustainability, while the SDGs give clear goals that countries can follow. Both focus on creating a better future.

Sustainability has three pillars: environmental, social and economic. The environmental pillar focuses on protecting nature and reducing pollution. The social pillar focuses on people’s health, education and equality. The economic pillar focuses on jobs, businesses and money.

Sustainability is a debated topic because people have different opinions about what is most important. For example, businesses may focus on making profits, while environmental groups want to reduce pollution.

In conclusion, sustainability means finding a balance between protecting nature, helping people and supporting the economy. This can be difficult because everyone has different needs and priorities.

2.

1. Environmental challenge: High energy consumption

Schools and universities use energy for heating, lighting and computers. This increases carbon emissions and energy costs.

Pillar: Environmental.

Solution: Install LED lighting, improve insulation and use renewable energy where possible.

2. Social challenge: Inequality in education

Some students lack access to computers, the internet, textbooks or additional learning support. This can affect their educational opportunities.

Pillar: Social.

Solution: Provide affordable learning resources, bursaries and accessible digital learning.

3. Economic challenge: Limited funding

Schools may struggle to afford energy-efficient buildings, modern equipment and sustainable learning materials.

Pillar: Economic.

Solution: Seek grants, establish partnerships and invest in improvements that reduce long-term costs.

3.

My Chosen Community: Swansea

I have chosen Swansea because it is the community where I live and work. Swansea is a coastal city with beautiful natural surroundings, local businesses and a diverse population. However, like other communities, it faces sustainability challenges.

One important issue is waste management. Reducing litter and improving recycling can help protect the environment, particularly in public spaces and coastal areas. Another challenge is public transport. Affordable and reliable buses can help residents travel to work, education and essential services while reducing dependence on cars. A third issue is protecting green spaces, which support wildlife, improve air quality and provide places for people to relax.

These challenges relate to the three sustainability pillars. Waste reduction and protecting green spaces support environmental sustainability. Reliable transport and accessible public spaces contribute to social sustainability. Supporting local businesses and investing in efficient public services can strengthen economic sustainability.

I believe Swansea can become more sustainable through better recycling, improved public transport, community clean-up activities and investment in green spaces. Residents, businesses and the local council all have a role to play.

I chose Swansea because sustainability is important to the quality of life of people living here today and for future generations. Small actions by individuals and larger actions by organisations can work together to create a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable community.

by Simion Simion.

Activity 1: Reflection

The UN SDGs define sustainability as balancing economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection. Critical academic sources argue that standard definitions focus too much on continuous growth and ignore ecological limits.

They differ because the UN focuses heavily on social and economic development alongside the environment, while critical views emphasize that current economic models exploit nature and fail to fix inequalities.

Sustainability is a contested concept because governments, companies, and activists have different goals and values. There is no universal agreement on how to balance human needs with limited planetary resources, making it a constant debate.

Activity 2: Sector Sustainability Challenges

High Energy Consumption: Universities use huge amounts of energy for buildings and labs. (Pillar: Environmental)

Mental Health & Wellbeing: Academic pressure and workloads cause burnout for students and staff. (Pillar: Social)

Activity: Community Forum Post

"Hello everyone! I chose Roman (Neamț County) because it faces interesting local challenges regarding energy transition, modernizing public transport, and balancing industrial spaces with green areas for the community."
