Activity 1 -Pre-Lecture Activity: Scenario Analysis (45 mins)

Instructions
Read each scenario and discuss the following questions:

What equality issues can you identify?
What equity issues can you identify?
What inclusive interventions could be implemented to improve the situation?

Be prepared to share your ideas during the lecture.

Scenario 1: The Team Meeting
A medium-sized company holds a weekly team meeting every Monday at 8:00 am.
Several employees regularly struggle to attend:

One employee has caring responsibilities for a young child and cannot arrive before 9:00 am.
Another employee works remotely and often experiences technical difficulties joining the meeting.
A new international employee has expressed concerns about understanding discussions because colleagues frequently use local slang and acronyms.

The manager insists that everyone should attend the meeting in the same way because "everyone is treated equally."
Discussion Questions

Is treating everyone the same always fair?
Who may be disadvantaged by the current arrangements?
How could the organisation create a more inclusive meeting environment?

Scenario 2: Promotion Opportunities
A supervisor position becomes available within a healthcare organisation.
The vacancy is advertised internally for five days only. Most office-based staff become aware of the opportunity immediately. However, many frontline workers, who spend most of their time with patients, rarely access organisational emails and miss the advertisement.
As a result, all shortlisted candidates come from office-based departments.
Discussion Questions

Has everyone been given an equal opportunity to apply?
Are there any barriers affecting certain groups of employees?
What could the organisation do to promote greater equity and inclusion in recruitment processes?

Scenario 3: Staff Social Event
An organisation plans an end-of-year celebration at a local restaurant.
The venue is located on the first floor with no lift access. The event menu contains limited vegetarian, halal, and allergy-friendly options. The event is scheduled for a Friday evening and attendance is described as "optional but strongly encouraged."
Several employees feel unable to attend for various reasons, including accessibility requirements, religious commitments, dietary needs, and caring responsibilities.
Discussion Questions

Which equality and inclusion issues are evident in this scenario?
How might some employees feel excluded despite attendance being optional?
What alternative approaches could make the event more inclusive for everyone?

Extension Challenge
For each scenario, consider:

What is the difference between an equality-based solution and an equity-based solution?

Remember:

Equality = everyone receives the same treatment.
Equity = people receive the support they need to achieve comparable opportunities and outcomes.
Inclusion = everyone feels valued, respected, and able to participate fully.

by Cristina Ghepes.

Equality means treating people fairly, equity means giving people the support they need and inclusion means making sure everyone feels welcome and able to participate.

Scenario 1- Team Meeting

Equality issues:

The meeting is at 8 am , which is difficult for the employee with childcare resposnsibilities

The remote worker has technical problems

The international employee may not understand slang and acronysms.

Equity issues:

Everyone is treated the same, but not everyone has the same needs

Some employees need extra support to participate

Inclusive interventions:

Move the meeting to a later time

Provide recordings and meeting notes

Give technical support

Use clear language and explain acronyms.

My view: ” Treating everyone the same is not always fair because people have different needs”

Scenario 2- Promotion Opportunities

Equality issues:

The vacancy was advertised for only five days

Frontline workers may not have regular access to emails

Equity issues:

Frontline workers did not have the same opportunity to see and apply for the job

Inclusive interventions:

Advertise vacancies in different ways

Give staff more time to apply

Tell frontline workers about opportunities during team meetings.

My view: ” Everyone should have a fair chance to know about and apply for promotion opportunities.”

Scenario 3- Staff Social Event

Equality issues:

The venue is not accessible for everyone

There are limited food choices

Friday evening may not suit everyone.

Equity issues:

Some employees may not be able to attend because of disability, religion, dietary needs or caring responsibilities.

Inclusive interventions:

Chose an accessible venue

Provide different food options

Consider the timing of the event

Offer an alternative for people who cannot attend.

My view: ”An event should be planned so that everyone has a real opportunity to take part.”
