by Darrelyn Gunzburg.

Dear Kavita,

You are correct. You are creating one single image of a sky phenomenon. The essay question is not asking you to create a sky journal, as you might have done in the Foundations module. However, in order to build your connection with the sky phenomenon of your choice (in this case the moon) and rather than leave it up to chance that the night is clear, and you are not going out on a dark moon (for example) or it is raining (not likely in Queensland at the moment, I know), I am simply suggesting one approach you might take to creating your first primary source, whether that be your observation of the moon, a sunset, clouds, a constellation, and so on. I hope that has clarified things for you.

Cheers,

by Kavita Maharaj.

Thank you for your feedback, Darrelyn.

I'll start by observing the moon for a week and then select a painting, mural, or stained glass that speaks to me to compare my observations with. I may even get to witness the eclipse next week.

Just so that I am understanding correctly, am I keeping a sky journal and taking photos or making drawings and paintings that I can use throughout my essay to compare and contrast with the other piece that I end up selecting? I think I may have misunderstood that I was to create a single artwork of a sky phenomenon for comparison with one other piece.

by Darrelyn Gunzburg.

Dear Kavita,

This is a really interesting idea for a PhD. However, the fact that the eclipse may not be visible and that you need to do so much research into the Codex are not really supportive factors in considering this as a subject for this 4,500 word essay. Why don't you observe the moon for a week and make drawings and paintings of it, and then look for a painting, a piece of stained glass, or a mural of the moon and compare and contrast those? That gives you a wide catchment of options for this essay and gives you the best chance of embedding the set learning outcomes. So give some more thought to this and then send me your ideas.

My best,
Darrelyn
