by Janet Thorndycraft.

Hi everyone, I've enjoyed reading your introductions, I'm late in posting as I hadn't found where to write on the forum. I live in Kent and began my studies as a mature student when I signed up at the age of 30 to complete an A level in English Literature/Language. I'd always regretted not doing it at school but perhaps did better being older!! I followed this up with an OU BA which I loved and waited a long time before completing an MA in Medieval Studies this year and immediately started Ancient Religions.

The only thing I knew about Cleopatra was from the Carry On film and the writing of Shakespeare so it was very interesting to read the views of Horace, Paterculus, Plutarch and Dio Cassius. Horace initially views her as dangerous and delusional plotting the ruin of Rome but grudgingly shifts his tone grudging respect for a defiant act that robs Rome of publically humiliating her.

Interestingly, Paterculus seems to see Antony's death as a redemption for his masculine failings but Cleopatra's as fearless, considering she was a woman.

For Plutarch, Antony is more heroic in helping Brutus to escape, with friends preventing his suicidal attempt. Plutarch gives various accounts of Cleopatra's death but has to admit that no-one actually knows, his version is more fanciful, not so judgemental.

Dio Cassius is more descriptive and elaborate, appearing to use her feminine charms to beguile Caesar, imploring him to read his father's letters. A complete contrasting character is portrayed from the previous writers but she is being manipulative and cunning.

Enjoy the course, it's been lovely to meet some of you, Janet

by Izzi Beresford.

Hi Matthew & Everyone,

I will be doing this course over 4 years, distance learning. I am 32, mum of 2 and I live in Cornwall. For the past 10 years have been fascinated by Ancient Religion, in particular Goddess Cults and the role of female deities. I am excited to expand my knowledge and learn about so many new arenas.

I look forward to learning with you all.

From Isabella
