Journal review 2 - ‘Applying the TARGET Pedagogical Principles in Physical Education to Enhance Students Physical Literacy’.

The journal of ‘Applying the TARGET Pedagogical Principles in Physical Education to Enhance Students Physical Literacy’ by Kevin Morgan states the goal of the TARGET pedagogical framework is to improve students' physical literacy within the context of physical education courses.

The TARGET structures stand for Task, Authority, Recognition, Grouping, Evaluation and Time. In terms of physical literacy, when the principles are present, the journal suggest it allows coaches to determine the students' current point in their personal learning journey, discuss their areas of strength and growth with them, and decide on the best course of action for progress. Additionally, allowing students to create the ideal level of challenge and to boost students' motivation, confidence, and sense of inclusion, assign extension assignments to students who complete their assignments ahead of schedule and provide extra practice and learning time for those who require it.

The article specifically is provide evidence for why the TARGET structures are having positive motivational responses, such as higher levels of perceived competence, satisfaction, and enjoyment; less boredom; a stronger preference for taking on more challenging tasks; higher intrinsic motivation; and a stronger belief that success is the result of effort, have been linked to manipulating the TARGET structures in PE to be mastery focused.

To conclude, the TARGET principles are successful if used properly. Teachers need to design the correct format to use that suits their students' abilities if not they are not sustainable. For students I think it's a smart approach to make sure they are staying on top of their work and being organized.
