by Sophia Poveda Oates.

The article ‘Stress youth in sport’ focuses on young tennis players and the stressors amongst young talented athletes. highlights the key roles parents play in their children’s successes and downfalls within sport ‘Parents play a critical role in children’s socialization to sport and throughout their sporting lives’ (Brustad, 1996; Wuerth, Lee, & Alfermann, 2004). Fredricks and Eccles (2004) using this quotation and citing this information helps the journal reflect how much of a detrimental role parents play in a child’s sporting career. It explains the stresses in youth sport can be rooted from parents financial and life difficulties that can unfortunately be reflected in the young sportspersons career and limitations. It highlights parent’s as ‘providers’ which conveys the emotional and financial and time parents give to their children’s sport which not only has a benefit for the Childs progression but can be seen as toll to some parent’s lifestyle. The journal includes evidence such as tables and graphs to highlight the analysation of key stressors within organisations in tennis players. The journal also explains and uses interviews recorded from tennis parents of how stressful life can be from having a child in such an elite programme. Stating that their life is tennis work and sleep. Including parent interviews in a case study such as this was a great touch to see how they feel and made you want to dive deeper into the lives of young tennis families and empathise with the stresses that come with high performance athletes. The journal also includes the stresses of how families deal with rejection and how it can affect young players in the future. The journal explains how families can find these times difficult and the mental impact it can have on the child and their loved ones. The journal has educated me further on how families and young athletes may seem to enjoy and be excelling In their chosen sport, however how hard the lifestyle is by highlighting the stresses and struggles and showing the uglier side to a sports career.

Playful Pedagogy for Deeper Learning: Exploring the Implementation of the Play-Based Foundation Phase in Wales

by Adelaida Terente.

Academic Journal Review: "Playful Pedagogy for Deeper Learning: Exploring the Implementation of the Play-Based Foundation Phase in Wales"

The article, authored by Wainwright et al., investigates the implementation of the Foundation Phase, a play-based curriculum for children aged 3-7 in Wales. This approach emphasizes experiential and outdoor learning, aiming to foster engagement, well-being, and deeper learning. The study, conducted over three years, utilized observations, field notes, and videos to explore how children perceive and engage with tasks framed as play.
The findings highlight that tasks perceived as playful led to greater pupil involvement and emotional well-being. The researchers introduce the concept of a "play-work continuum," emphasizing that children interpret activities based on environmental and emotional cues, such as autonomy and choice. This perception significantly impacts intrinsic motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes. The study suggests that blending playful practices with structured activities helps children perceive learning as enjoyable, thereby promoting a state of “flow,” which is closely associated with deep learning and intellectual development.
The article contextualizes the Foundation Phase within international educational frameworks like High-Scope and Reggio Emilia, which focus on participatory and holistic learning. These frameworks, aligned with Dewey’s experiential learning philosophy, stress the importance of creating environments that support exploration, reasoning, and self-directed growth.
Importantly, the research underscores the role of teacher competence in designing environments that balance structure and autonomy. A well-organized, flexible space can blur the boundaries between play and formal instruction, ensuring children maintain intrinsic motivation and engagement. The study also highlights the significance of experiential learning in cultivating long-term educational benefits, advocating for practices that align with children’s natural curiosity and playfulness.
Overall, the article provides valuable insights into the pedagogical importance of play in early education, offering practical recommendations for enhancing engagement, well-being, and lifelong learning skills. It serves as a robust contribution to the discourse on play-based pedagogy.
