Essay 2 - Sky Journal

由“Jennifer Jones”.

For this essay, I'd like to consider the sky as it relates to the landscape, and the quote 'to think is to walk among clouds.' I am interested in the depth of the sky; that is, how the clouds (and sky, and birds, and trees that I observe already every day) feel very close and connected to my immediate landscape and the land to which I am connected, and yet at night, the stars are distant, expanding this sense of connection. I am curious to record how this consideration changes my relationship with the sky over the month.

由“Paulina Davie Leang”.

For the sky journal, I will document the moon's phases as she travels through the different lunar stations paired with an ekphrastic response--inspired by J.M. Hamade's Procession of the Night Theatre.

I will relate it to this quote: ‘To think is to walk among clouds.’

SKY JOURNAL (Van Gough)

由“Rob Abrahamsen”.

Hello,

Thinking of taking constellation of Cygnus (The Swan) as my aspect of the sky. Observing it over the weeks. It's now overhead in my home town at about 9pm. My key theme would be enchantment (hence Van Gough quote). Enchantment in diverse senses, e.g. Myths - Zeus enchanting Leda (Queen of Sparta) by disguising himself as a swan and seducing her. So enchantment in the sense of deception something not usually, (or at least often) linked with enchantment. Also exploring other myths associated with the star group, and how they were shaped by the culture that gave rise to a specific myth.

Also Enchantment in a positive sense - being enchanted - And the overriding sense of enchantment that being aware of these stories generates when looking up at the stars - connectedness with the past and other ways of interpreting the sky.

Would include something about the notion of disenchantment as result of "enlightenment" and rise of science/materialism - and its critics.

Just initial provisional thoughts.

Rob

p.s. Link to Eagleton/Scruten debate - brilliant exchanges about culture!
