by Vitalina Kraievska.

Selected Topic: High prevalence of cardiovascular disease in Newham

1. Research Question:

How do lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, and stress) contribute to cardiovascular disease in adults living in Newham?

2. Research Method

Mixed Methods Approach – combining quantitative and qualitative data:

Quantitative:
Survey adults on diet, physical activity, smoking, alcohol, and stress
Collect existing health records (e.g., hospital admissions for heart disease)
Qualitative:
Conduct focus groups or interviews to explore:
Barriers to healthy living
Cultural influences on diet and lifestyle.

3. Sample Size
Quantitative survey: 200–300 adults from different areas of Newham (ensures diversity in age, gender, and ethnic background)
Qualitative interviews/focus groups: 20–30 participants for in-depth understanding.

4. Additional Notes
Ensure ethnically and socioeconomically representative sample
Use anonymous surveys to protect privacy
Analyse data:
Quantitative → statistical correlations between lifestyle and cardiovascular disease
Qualitative → thematic analysis of barriers and motivators.

5. Outcome
Identify key lifestyle factors contributing to heart disease
Provide evidence for community health interventions
Inform public health campaigns in Newham
