Self-determination means having the freedom, ability, and right to make your own choices and decisions about your life.

In Health and Social Care, self-determination is important because it allows individuals to:

Decide what care and support they want.
Make choices about their daily activities and lifestyle.
Be involved in decisions that affect their health and wellbeing.
Maintain independence and control over their lives.

Example: A resident in a care home chooses what time they would like to get up, what clothes to wear, and which activities to take part in. The care staff support these choices whenever possible.

Step 1: Career Goal

My career goal is to become a Support worker/Supervisor in the Health and Social Care sector. I want to help people improve their health and wellbeing while providing high-quality care and support.

Step 2: Skills and Qualifications Needed

To achieve this goal, I need to:

Complete my Health and Social Care qualification.
Gain experience through volunteering or work placements in healthcare settings.
Develop important skills such as communication, empathy, teamwork, problem-solving, and patient care.
Study for a nursing degree and meet the entry requirements.

Step 3: Action Plan

Short-term (1 year): Successfully complete my current Health and Social Care course and improve my communication and care skills.
Medium-term (2–4 years): Apply for and complete a nursing degree while gaining practical experience in hospitals or care settings.
Long-term (5+ years): Qualify Support worker and supervisor in the the health and social care settings and continue professional development through additional training and specialisations.

Outcome: By following this plan, I will build the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to achieve a successful career in Health and Social Care.
