It is interesting to note that the best moment to seek luck is usually when you are most complacent. You are inclined to intensify your search during your most desperate moments. It is only proper to successfully set stretch objectives for yourself when you have the chance and motivated by achievement.

In the unit stretch goals is seen as individuals involve placing themselves in unfamiliar or unpredictable situations where they are not yet an expert, (Gary et al., 2017). It also highlights that lucky people tend to thrive in complex or chaotic environments by seeking novel solutions. This is illustrated through the Cynefin framework, which categorizes situations into clear, complicated, complex, and chaotic each requiring different decision-making approaches, (Fierro, Putino and Tirone, 2018).

The unit emphasize that luck is not just random but can be actively pursued through intentional actions, that idea resonates deeply with my personal journey. Moving from Namibia to the United Kingdom was a leap into the unknown. As a mother of three, the decision wasn’t just about personal ambition it was about creating a better future for my children. Working as a carer while attending university means I constantly navigate complex scenarios balancing work, academic pressure, and family responsibilities. By choosing to study while working, I have set myself a stretch goal. The unit emphasize on the importance to network more effectively by seeking a wide range of connections. That is something I have embraced whether it’s connecting with my peers at university, learning from colleagues at work, or drawing inspiration from my children’s curiosity.

The idea of active luck, making choices and taking action to create chances for good things to happen, has helped me see my problems in a new way. Instead of seeing my dual role as carer and student as a burden, I now view it as a unique strength. Moreover, the emphasis on career conversations and finding the sweet spot between skills, interests, and market needs is guiding my future planning. I’m beginning to map out where my caregiving experience, academic knowledge, and personal values intersect. This reflection helps me to identify that aspiring job role as a nurse align with both my passion and practical experience.

The unit has also taught me that luck Favors the curious, the connected, and the courageous. It is not just about being in the right place at the right time it is about becoming the right person through intentional choices. As a mother, student, and carer, I am not just surviving I am actively shaping a future filled with purpose and possibility.

This unit emphasizes the impact of mindset, curiosity, and goal setting strategy on individual and professional development, especially in an uncertain environment. It shows the difference between blind luck and active luck and presents the Cynefin framework for decision making and shows the importance of stretch goals and the serendipity mindset, (The Cynefin Company, 2024). Professor Liu’s research shows that luck often plays a big role in people who achieve great success, (Laskin, 2022). The ideas behind blind luck are things that happen by chance, and active luck is luck that is created through action. Cynefin framework helps deal with complex situations and explains why it is important to set challenging goals when good opportunities present themselves, (Gupta, 2025).

These ideas align with my own life. As a military wife and mother of three, I have had to adapt to constant change, often without knowing what comes next. My volunteering with SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) as a case worker has taught me to be more understanding and to build trust. Skills that are very important in my new job as a support worker and my aspiring job social worker. These changes are stretch goals for me, a step forward made with purpose, not out of necessity. The Cynefin framework helps me make sense of the complex situations I face in safeguarding and emotional support, allowing me to respond in the right way for each situation. The serendipity mindset also fits well with my experience, reminding me to stay open to new and unexpected opportunities, which is vital in both military life and social work. When searching for a job, I focus on looking for roles and organisations that match my core values like helping others and making a difference, while also meeting my needs for independence and family balance. The networking and advocacy skills I developed through SSAFA now will help me grow in my future career in a more focused and intentional way.

This unit reminds me that growth doesn’t happen in a straight line, and success is not only achieved through effort, it often comes from being curious, building connections, and staying open to new chances. By matching my goals with my values and facing challenges with confidence, I can keep helping others while growing in my chosen career. These lessons will guide how I look at future opportunities, improve my Personal Development Plan, and make a positive difference in caring and protecting vulnerable people.
